Police were forced to stab a dog to death after it clamped its jaws on an officer’s leg during a drugs raid.

The incident took place early today in a raid in Lewisham.

The police said officers forced their way into the address and once inside a detective was bitten by the dog which then clamped its jaws onto his leg.

Other officers tried to remove it by hitting the dog with batons and firing CS spray into the dog’s face.

Police called for back-up from the dogs unit and armed police but they quickly became increasingly concerned for the officer’s safety.

The animal, believed to be a type of Staffordshire bull terrier, refused to let go and the dog was stabbed and killed with a knife by another officer.

The 39-year-old injured officer, a trainee detective constable based in Lewisham, was taken by ambulance to a south London hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. He is due to undergo surgery for his injuries.

Police said the raid took place at 6.20am at an address in Lonsdale Close.

A spokesman said no drugs were found at the address and no arrests were made.

The dog is not believed to be a dangerous or banned breed at this stage.

The police said it had received a complaint about the incident and the matter was being investigated by Lewisham's Professional Standard Unit.

Well, at least the dog got a part of the cop before this ended.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to just injure the cop. Too bad his mouth wasn't bigger and he didn't get it around the cops neck.

Probably would've shot it, but they didn't want to risk shooting the officer in the process.

TBH, this will probably give more reason to shoot dogs on sight.
