no surprise, but end of an era, end of a generation. John Dingall retired, and Ralph Hall lost his primary

The title must mean last WW2 veteran in Congress. Plenty of WW2 vets left.

Yeah, I thought my WWII Army Infantry Omaha Beach Veteran neighbor would get a kick out of knowing he wasn't counted among the last.

Edwards is not in congress, but he will be last WWII vet to seek a congressional seat.

I agree. Still sad to see people still vote for a convicted felon(on corruption charges)

I don't know how he won the Governor's race in 1991, he was a felon then and it was all over the news.

"WWII vet"," 'merica"...vote harderer.

Propaganda works wonders if you control the media. No internet worth using in 1991.

Plus I just realized that's when he ran against David Duke.

Just imagine if Louisiana had elected the grand poobah of the clan as its governor. that would have been awkward. to put it nicely.
He wanted to end the welfare state. Which I agree. I just don't think we agree for the same reason.

Yes, we were faced with an election between Edwin Edwards vs. David Duke. The ultimate lose-lose scenario. I sat that one out too. Couldn't bring myself to vote for either of those assholes.

The funny thing about Duke in 1991 is that he made a lot of sense in that election. He sounded nearly identical to Pat Buchanan. The problem is he was holding a lot of his past back. After the election, he became a full-blown white nationalist again. :(

He at least deserves a hat for his service

Sadly, several members of this board would enthusiastically vote for Duke.

I can't believe he had a baby boy recently. He's 87.

Duke's problem is that 15% of his views are extreme. But 85% are pure paleo-conservative. In 1991 he sounded mainstream, because he masked his white nationalism and said it was a thing of the past. Only later on did he go totally off the deep end and join Stormfront. I honestly thought he changed in 1991, but hey, what do 17 year olds know?
