I think they use them as working dogs and guard dogs, they just won't keep them as pets. Sort of like the cop's K9s -- something to use and abuse.

Some of them that is -- I chatted with a muslim Turkish woman online who said she was a dog lover, and she said that she would have one as a pet if she could, but her apartment would not allow pets.

I know plenty of Muslims who have dogs. Traditionally they have been used as guard dogs or for hunting. Now some use them as guard dogs such as my relatives in Pakistan and give them western names like Tony, Jackie, Johnny. But I believe in Pakistan is more of a social status thing. I have a dog, I am rich etc. They don't keep the dog inside the house though, unless its in a kennel.

Other American Muslims I know actually let them in the house and sit on the couch. Those are 'liberal' Muslims. The only thing Islam has problem with generally is that the dog's saliva is considered 'unclean' or 'ritually impure'. However, if the dog catches a prey with its mouth, the prey is still okay to be eaten, according to the Quran. There's also a story in the Quran about a noble dog that protects people in a cave. Also there's some story about a prostitute being forgiven by God because she gave water to a thirsty dog.

But, generally speaking, dogs are not kept as pets in Muslim countries, so you see a lot of strays. Hence, most Muslims are unfamiliar with the animal and the stray dogs they do see most likely lead to a negative perception.

Quite shameful that the SEALs didn't have the intel that the al-Qaeda had dogs.
