I definitely agree.
Once illegal immigration is taken care of, I think a lot of the tension will go away. Hopefully the spanish language will then elicit less apprehension as it does currently. As it is now, the Spanish language is closely tied with illegal immigration in the minds of average citizens. At my job, I often speak Spanish with customers. They are surprised that I speak it, because of my utter whiteness. They usually mention that they are trying to learn English, but that it's very hard/intimidating. I don't think there are many people out there who refuse to speak English out of principle... that would be retarded. If you listen to Spanish language radio, you hear a lot of ads for products or services that teach English.
The point I'm trying to make is that addressing special groups on their playing field does not mean you are pandering as long as your message is consistent and honest.

One thing that I hear people complain about a lot is having to "press 1 for english, oprima 2 para espaņol" but they need to realize that in the rest of the Americas they have to do the same thing!
