One of my lasting memories when Ross Perot was of him being mobbed by enthusiastic cub scouts.
It was particularly amusing because they were almost as big as he was.

Ron Paul should do more photo ops with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, brownies, and cub scouts.

There may be a way to tie in Girl Scout cookie sales to Ron Paul in some way. Just an idea.

Uhoh...I am just waiting for someone to post, "The Boy Scouts quietly control the CFR. Never once in the past X years has a man risen to the Presidency without a merit badge".

That being said, I think Baden Powell got the whole thing started in the early 20th century, so that actually means it wouldn't be hard to have several scouts become Presidents.

I made it to boyscouts briefly and then quit. It wasn't exactly the coolest thing to do in my area, but it was OK when younger, and a lot of kids here were in cub scouts. Most anyone who was still in it in high school, or middle school even, got made fun of pretty badly here where I live.

My mom was our den mother for several years when I was a cub scout, and the meetings were at my house.

Eagle Scout, OA Member and Philmount High Adventure participant. Boy Scouts was truly an amazing experience for me. I loved it. I thankfully had a really great troop. I wished more American boys took part in it. But it has a very "nerdy" reputation unforunately. I was an avid high school athlete and I had to "hide" the fact that I was a Boy Scout from my popular athlete friends. Stupid I know. But Boy Scouts made me who I am today. My respect for nature, service before self etc.

P.S. Unfortunately there are also a lot of adults in Scouting that should NEVER be around young boys. But that's indicative of a lot of our society these days i.e. schools, camps, sports etc.

I also thought Scouting/Eagle Scout would really look good on my resume/college applications but it really didn't do shit. My grandfather was an Eagle Scout and my uncle. I think it held more weight generations ago unfortunately.

I was a scout growing up. I was either unable to understand what they tried to teach as a young lad, or they didn't teach me anything of great importance. I'm talking about lessons on life and philosophy.. I understand the scouts as an organization for fathers to try and instill certain values in their sons indirectly through camping trips and other things of the sort, that fathers trust the scouts to help mold their sons. The scouts might achieve this for some, but not in my experience. Perhaps I should have remained a scout through my teen years so I could learn to hear the unvoiced message as my mind matured, or perhaps a scout only turns out as good as his den leaders (his parents) are. Funny, all of the peers in my den that I can remember, turned out to be rebellious (as in rebelling for the sake of doing so like most teens do) dope smokers in their later teen years.

Scout Oath (or Promise)
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
brave, clean, and reverent.

Just grabbed this off the boy scout site because I could not remember it after so many years. Certainly me and my peers remembered it whenever our den leaders scolded us, but no explanations were provided. We as children, probably only dared to figure virtue was a mechanism for which to earn our parent's praise and rewards (cookies!). This is all very fine up until a certain point....

Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy's sense of belonging.

A sense of belonging is also only good up until a certain point, until we reach our early teens and start looking for reasons to rebel against our parents. We look at our parent's flaws, and perhaps unconsciously decide being in the scouts is not in our interests anymore. Most kids in the scouts only ever realize that it is a way of being with their friends, and we're already with our friends all day long in public school. Once our minds mature and the flair of camping trips and other outdoor activities wares off, we leave the scouts. This is why me and my friends never became Eagles..., perhaps those of you who remained in the scouts had good den leaders/parents? As an adult today I can think of reasons why I should have remained a scout, but really as a kid there was no way I could have not quit. There was no reason to remain a scout, no philosophy or sense of purpose that could bind me to the organization as a teen, no example provided by my parents.

I'm just ranting for the sake of reflection, maybe you parents who have young boys in the scouts today can find my points useful. Certainly most on this board know that man has an inherent nature that cannot be molded willy-nilly, but do we remember that our children have an essential nature too? I guess what I'm saying is, for the most part the boy scout organization is an ineffective means for raising good kids, much like the DARE program is an ineffective way of keeping kids away from drugs.

Heh, ya.. I was in an LDS troop so I didn't do that.. but I had a friend who was in a non-affiliated troop and smoked plenty of herb and did plenty of shrooms with his fellow scouts..

Then in college I met a guy who was in troop 420 up near Sacramento, and they're logo at the time blatantly alluded to smoking bowls :D

Oh, please give it a rest...I was a girl scout/brownie and it was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful....learned all kinds of things. We camped every month. Why would you want to go on overnight camp outs with the opposite sex? (when you are a kid, Matt, calm down)
Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization and I fully support it by eating lots of cookies. Many strong feminists started out as scouts.

Its not sexist to be devided by gender it is fun!

Signed up my son for cub scouts tonight!! Really excited. He spends time with girls all day. And you know who his little friends are? boys...the boys and girls devide THEMSELVES. Its just nature.

That's like saying when the black kids were separated from the white kids it wasn't racist. That was instituted with the force of law. The BSA is a private organization. And not every aspect of the BSA separates guys from gals.

Besides, there are advantages to having them separated in some situations, specifically some learning environments. There are a lot of things one can learn by being in an environment of the same sex.

Trusworthy. Loyal. Helpful. Friendly. Courteous. Kind. Obedient. Cheerful. Thrifty. Brave. Clean. Reverent. Got my Eagle the same time as my older brother.

This was in Colorado. We had an annual Klondike Derby competition with many other troops where you had to pull a sled around with all your gear (a sprint race with the sleds was the first competition) to different sites and compete on Scout Skills. One year it got down to minus 32 degrees at night. Pretty cold to be in tents!

That Eagle Scout project on the video looks good. Wonder if they need any supervisor assistance.

I was a Life scout. I think I was two merit badges and a project from making Eagle before I found other interests in high school.

LOL. Same. Damn high school and sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Oh by the way ALL past, current, and former Boy Scouts MUST watch this short video:

OMFG!! They deserve a badge for this! :D I would never have thought of that groping scam when I was 12! I see a future for these guys in the "adult entertainment" industry. ;)

Is there an organization out there for adults who never got the Boy Scouts experience but wanna learn how to do all that outdoor stuff? Preferably without any anti-atheist slants

Nah, I just regret never learning outdoors skills, even though I like doing outdoors stuff like hiking. There are organizations for kids and I guess teens, but I've never heard of something for adults so thought I'd ask

I spy an opportunity for appleseed.org to broaden its focus to include Survival Skills Lite -- MacGuyver meets City Slickers. I mean, seriously, for every one of you gun-toting, fitness-minded, uber prepared Johnny-On-The-Spot types, you gotta realize how many, ahem, others would be hard-pressed to pick out the North Star.

Fuck their Service Hoax. Americans would better apply themselves to fitness regimens. I would never have thought that I would think this, still, being able to pick up and go on an hour's notice now seems like a worthy goal.

Parenthetically, do I not also spy a natural liaison between appleseed.org and Jefferson State?

Hope you know I was only joking....

You can contact the Nat'l Forsest Service, or your state forestry service. If you're in California, check out the CCC...you might even get a job with them.

According to this article, Obama isn't signing letters to Boy Scouts who have earned the rank of Eagle:

And why should he? The Boy Scouts should be an independent organization. They've received heavy funding from the Pentagon in the past as they offered a fast track to pushing their members to the military.

Wow... the dark side of Scouting ...hmmm....

Nothing dark about smoking bowls and shrooming out in the woods.. it's great fun and quite spiritual. Brings you in touch with nature in ways you wouldn't otherwise be able to be.. I didn't find that out until well after I was done with scouting.

Eagle, 1992.
These days I wish I had an alternative.
There was a whole lot that I learned in scouts that I appreciate - particularly the part where they set up a system by which older boys teach younger boys, who then grow up and teach the new crop. You don't get that anywhere else anymore.
But the more I find out about scouts, and the more I analyze it, the more I realize that it belongs in the same bin as public schooling: an idea that originally had a purpose other than that which everyone assumes it has today, which enriches kids quite by accident.

Luckily I don't have any boys, and the Girl Scouts are much more clear-cut about where they stand.

Well, I don't know about that, but it's verifiable that Baden-Powell wanted an organization that helped prepare boys for military service (this was at the height of the British Empire).

Well, unfortunately the outdoor stuff is really just a portion of scouting. My troop met every week, and there was only one event per month, which may or may not have been camping.

The camping is at various levels, too: it covers the gamut between sleeping in a tent with a cot with flush toilets and hot showers nearby, to having to carry everything you're using on your back through the rocky mountains for two hundred miles and not being able to clean up for five days at a time. You can get to be an Eagle quite easily and not even participate in the latter.

My Eagle was a favor to my dad, who never got his and has two other sons who didn't... I was really just in it for the hardcore outdoor stuff.

Absolutely, but that's definitely not what it's about now.

2nd class here but I was one of the few in my troop who could start a fire consistently with one match. That never seems to surprise anyone who knows me well. I'm a bit of a pyro. My Scout Master even whittled me a match neckerchief.

It's been a long time. Started out in the late 50's with the Cub Scouts and into the early to mid-60's with the Boy Scouts. Achieved Life, but as my memory serves, fell a badge or two short of Eagle.

I did a few years in cub scouts, webelos, boy scouts. I enjoyed it as a kid.

In my teenage years, all the little badges that had seemed so cool when I was 8 rapidly lost their appeal, so I moved on to other things.

Was a Cub Scout, Explorer and later Venture Crew Assistant. Having said this, however, I agree with Penn & Teller that the BSA SHOULD return to the pre-1972 stance of having NO STANCE WHATSOEVER on Religion or Sexuality for the Scouts themselves. Whether they are gay or atheist, that should NOT be a determining factor for Scouts.
