Did yours truly inspire this column (1 (http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/12/05/eric-garrner-protests-reform--cigarette-taxes-column/19948609/), 2 (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?464229-Balko-Rand-Paul-is-right-that-seemingly-innocuous-laws-are-enforced-with-violence&p=5721289&viewfull=1#post5721289))? Probably not but I'm glad others are seeing the parallel and this is an area where I think the oppression of the state harms socio-economic minorities a great deal. The VP of Cato, David Boaz is a great person to lead the charge (http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/12/05/eric-garrner-protests-reform--cigarette-taxes-column/19948609/).
The violent death of Mohamed Bouazizi in Tunisia set off the Arab Spring. Could the killing of Eric Garner lead to a springtime of police reform – and regulatory reform -- in the United States?
Bouazizi was a street vendor, selling fruits and vegetables from a cart. He aspired to buy a pickup truck to expand his business. But, as property rights reformer Hernando de Soto wrote in the Wall Street Journal, "to get a loan to buy the truck, he needed collateral — and since the assets he held weren't legally recorded or had murky titles, he didn't qualify."
As I said in earlier Rand Paul should continue bringing up the effect of government on the poor and consider the political costs/benefits of linking Garner and Bouazizi. It's better...politically... than talking about the cops being the issue.
