Newly-elected Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi recently announced that his administration has stopped issuing salary payments to over 50,000 names on the Iraqi army's payroll that have been identified as being fake or belonging to soldiers that died in combat or failed to report to duty. The mistake has been costing the US-funded Iraqi government upwards of $380 million per year and tricking generals on the ground into thinking that they had more troops than were actually available.
