A gunman targeted three downtown public buildings -- the Mexican consulate, federal courthouse and police headquarters -- before police shot and killed him, according to local media reports.
Police said the unidentified man, who was wearing a suspicious vest, opened fire on area buildings at around 2:30 a.m. local time, KVUE-TV reports.
The Austin American-Statesman reported that the Mexican consulate and federal courthouse were among the targeted locations, as well as the police building.
The gunman was shot by a police officer in front of the police headquarters, Assistant Police Chief Raul Munguia told reporters.
"An officer outside the building saw the suspect, fired at the suspect, the suspect went down," he said.
The suspect had fired about 100 rounds at buildings in the downtown area and had shot out windows at the police facility, which was evacuated, KLBJ radio reports.
Munguia told reporters that the suspected shooter, who was wearing "some type of vest," was shot near his vehicle, which appeared to contain an improvised explosive device.
After dragging the downed suspect across the street, officers "backed away" until the nature of his vest could be determined. The police bomb squad was on the scene.
Officers were also investigating an address in North Austin where the suspect lived. They said they are checking the residence for any other potential bombs.
