At around 9:30 Sunday night, officers were called to the home of Donald Roberts Wendt, age 50, on Oxford Drive West.
Bradenton Police Chief Michael Radzilowski said firefighter Donald Wendt was out in his front yard, threatening to kill himself and his sister. So, neighbors called 911.
“Patrol officers arrived and he wouldn't come out of the house so they called for the SWAT team and the hostage negotiators to talk to him," said Radzilowski.

But, before the hostage negotiators could talk to Wendt, the firefighter threatened the officers.
“Before they could even place their first call to make contact, [Wendt] walked out of the house, confronted the officers with two handguns and pointed one of them at the officers at which time, [Officer Jason Nutall] fired one shot and killed him," Radzilowski said.

During the incident, police made some of Wendt's neighbors leave their homes. They were kept a safe distance away.
Residents say they heard a lot of yelling during the incident and they're shocked that sometjhing like this could happen in their neighborhood.

Wendt's neighbors say he was a friendly man who kept to himself.
Officials say Wendt served two tours in Afghanistan and may have suffered from PTSD.
