I hope I can do this poll thing right. I'm trying to see if RP supporters really don't have much landlines. :)

But I never answer my landline unless I know who is calling.

Maybe include that somehow in your poll. "Have landline but don't answer it for unknown callers."

Wow...I sure wasn't expecting those poll results when I voted. I detested my cellphone and gave mine up a long time ago.

You, me, and the pollsters are like this  over the results so far, lol...

cell all the way. I don't use the phone much, so it was a lot cheaper to go cellular than landline.

I use both.

Cellular service at my house isn't dependable enough to rely on it exclusively.

I guess that's the price to pay for living in a somewhat rural area. Hell, I don't even have cable TV service here....have to pay for satellite.

Scribbler: I'm assuming a similar proportion of cellphone users or landline users occasionally don't/never answer their phones for strange numbers. Also, i don't think I can edit the poll itself.

But you are free to vote for whatever you feel is the most correct reply. ;)

A recent polling survey showed 13% of households having cell only.....

I think that is a gross mis-representation. For instance my mother, who is in her 50s, has a home line, but it is used for only desk calls, and faxes. She is not some techie internet forum user (have to show her how to connect to the internet). So if even she does not use a home phone then I would really expect that stat to be much higher.

I would like to see stats on how many actual minutes are used (home vs. cell) and the number of calls. I think a bunch of people actually have a landline, but dont use it as their primary line.

The same is true of me, so I put only cell phone. My parents usually answer the home phone, since I get my calls on my cell.

You need to put a choice in here for IP phone. Are IP phones treated differently in polling?

maiki

You can vote either landline or other phone technologies. I didn't know if VOIP is treated differently in polls. How would they know? Aren't they listed in the same way?

The way I understood it, the entry "Skype" implies VoIP, encompassing Skype, Sunrocket, Speakeasy Voice, and all the other VoIP providers.

VOIP and cell. There is no choice for this in the poll.

What about VOIP from my cable company? does it count as landline?

I know that a lots of people, including me, have switched to this new technology.

I really have no idea. lol! I can make another completely unscientific poll on the matter, if people please, though. I was trying to get a rough estimate of the disparities in a group of active ron paul supporters. I don't actually know how these polls collect voters.

If you are wondering about the effect on polling, then you might want to add an option of "have caller id, don't answer phone if unknown".

I have landline and a prepaid cell for when I'm on the road.
I don't answer either unless I know the caller, and never answer out of state calls that pop up on my caller id at home, they all go to the answering machine.

I did telemarketing for a while, and the vast majority of folks who answer calls from unknown people are those so bored that they will talk to anyone. Also those same folks are the most likely to buy something over the phone because they were so grateful to have someone to talk to for 5 minutes.

Polling organizations control for the age factor, so the cellphone thing is mostly a moot point.

My Wife and I only have cellphones. I also run multiple businesses using all FREE VOIP numbers, online voicemail, and online faxing. Internet Technology is too cool!

Age is one demographic factor, true, but cellphone use is not simply indicative of age. It can be indicative of less "settled" people, who live with roommates, who are more internet savvy, who move or travel more, that don't have stay at home families (both parents work), etc.

This not answering the phone thing is one thing: I figure all sorts of people are demographically equally annoyed by tele-marketers. But I think the sort of people who are cell-phone only would vote different from people in their same age bracket who are not. I'm just trying out this hypothesis.

I think that it's also important to keep in mind that many (if not most) people with landline telephones today also have caller-ID. And I bet that a good number of these people don't answer calls for things like polling--it just takes too much time, is an annoyance, and usually considered along the same lines as solicitors. So, I bet that a large portion of the adult voting population do not answer polling calls, even if they have and landline. I bet most of the people who contribute to the telephone polls are older, "out of touch," people who get their news from the newspapers and Fox News Channel. In other words, they are decidedly Republican, and they just say they support whoever the news says to--i.e., the "top tier candidates." It's only a matter of time, though, before the MSM has to take notice. And, of course, once he is heard and acknowledged as a "legitimate" candidate, I think that we will see Dr. Paul's support skyrocket.

Both, but I hate giving out my personal info. I ended up giving my info to, I think, Zogby, just for the odd chance I'll be contacted and can give support to Ron Paul.

I blame it on Stephen King. I read his book, "Cell", so now I will never use a cell phone. The aliens are listening.

Hmm.... Cellphones don't receive polling calls. It's quite possible that we're set up for a Dewey Defeats Truman moment when the pollster's discover that they can't accurately read the country because a significant enough portion do not have landlines. Political Scientists know this will happen, it's just a matter of when.
