This has been something that I've been thinking about for a while and Obama's forthcoming executive action on illegal immigration--especially in the aftermath of THIS (http://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/one-30-american-children-homeless-report-says-n250136) being released--has prompted me to make this thread and see what everyone here thinks.
As we look across the Atlantic, we see the rise of the UKIP in the United Kingdom and the National Front in France--two insurgent movements that can partly contribute their rise to the majorities dissatisfaction with the influx of immigration into their home nations. I've always held the belief that Europe has always been a couple of years ahead of the United States politically, and right now the population in these said European nations have finally grown to be fed-up with the constant stream of immigration that floods their nation. This begs the question: Can the same thing happen in the United States?
Firstly, most Americans believe in the idea of "American Exceptionalism," thus creating a fertile ground for a nationalist movement to plant their seeds of populism within the consciousness of a population. This appeal could easily be made by pointing out that the current ruling class panders and goes out of their way to help those who aren't even American citizens, yet they refuse to go out of their way to help the actual citizens. The link above would take you to the report that lists the startling statistic that 1 out of every 30 American children are homeless, yet the ruling class is more concerned with helping children who crossed the border illegally, and even want to place some of this illegal immigrants in five-star resorts! (http://www.breitbart.com/blog/2014/07/16/obama-gives-50-million-to-brownshirt-charity-group-to-open-illegal-immigrant-resort-spa-in-texas/)
This appeal could also gain traction within the African-American community. (http://www.nationalreview.com/article/382338/black-americans-true-casualties-amnesty-j-delgado) They're the ones who would feel the greatest amount of harm of amnesty, and the ruling class is once again leaving them out in the cold. With the right kind of rhetoric and political environment, I see the potential for the formation of a coalition of White and Black American voters if the United States continues down its current path of decadence.
I do concede that this kind of movement has the potential to be dangerous, as such is the case with any kind of populist-nationalist movement if the wrong person comes to power through it. Regardless, I posted this to see if I am the only one who feels that this kind of movement has the possibility to come into existence in the next few years. Also, if such a movement forms and gains a fair amount of traction, could you see them eventually winning power?
Tl;dr:
* A Populist/Nationalist Movement gains traction in the next few years due to the ruling class pandering to illegal immigrants and ignoring actual Americans.
* Essentially, this movement would be the American equivalent of the United Kingdom's UKIP and France's National Front (under Marine Le Penn; not her father).
* This movement eventually builds a coalition of White and Black American voters.
* Could they win?
