A political party platform or platform is a list of the values and actions which are supported by a political party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_party) or individual candidate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidate), in order to appeal to the general public, for the ultimate purpose of garnering the general public's support and votes about complicated topics or issues. "Plank" is the term often given to the componentry of the political platform, in terms of the opinions and viewpoints about individual topics, as held by a party, person, or organization. The word "plank" depicts a component of an overall political platform, as a metaphorical reference to a basic stage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_%28theatre%29) made out of boards or planks of wood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plank_%28wood%29). The metaphor can return to its literal origin when public speaking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_speaking) or debates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debates) are actually held upon a physical platform.

A party platform is sometimes referred to as a manifesto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifesto)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_platform#cite_note-1) or a political platform.
