Sen. John McCain implied that he would run for another Senate term in 2016 and is worried that he is the top target of conservatives and Tea Partiers who have never trusted him.

"You have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst," McCain told MSNBC on Wednesday when asked if he would run for reelection in 2016. "I definitely think that I would have to absolutely anticipate a tea party candidate or two or three. Everybody tells me that I'm the number one target of the tea partiers."

McCain told the left-wing outlet that he was "absolutely" leaning toward running again and said he talked with "finance people in the state," in addition to "different groups and organizations ranging from the Arizona Chamber to the Southern Arizona Defense Alliance to build the coalitions we need to build" for reelection.

As soon as he was reelected in 2010, McCain turned his back on Tea Partiers who gave him one more chance. He not only called Tea Partiers "hobbits" and "wacko birds," but he spearheaded the "Gang of Eight" comprehensive amnesty bill along with Senators like Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham.

He should just switch to "independent" today, and save us all the problem with the GOP primary. He can caucus with Obama and the Democrats.

A good question to ask those South Carolina folks who just re-elected Lindsey Graham. And there are people on these forums that say the GOP is "ripe" for a takeover

Apparently, McCain isn't the only member of the Republican Establishment who could face a primary in 2016. The Daily Caller just published an excellent piece on this.

These Republican Senators Could Face Conservative Challengers In 2016

Article here (http://dailycaller.com/2014/11/13/these-republican-senators-could-face-conservative-challengers-in-2016/?print=1).

More than 20 Republican-held Senate seats will be up for election in 2016, and conservative political operatives are already looking at which GOP incumbents could be vulnerable to conservative primary challengers.

This list is informed by interviews with operatives in the states and people involved with national conservative political groups.

Arizona Sen. John McCain

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e1/John_McCain_official_portrait_2009.jpg/330px-John_McCain_official_portrait_2009.jpg

There aren't many other incumbent Republican senators more unpopular with the conservative base.

An example of some conservative distaste for McCain in his state: The Maricopa County GOP has censured the lawmaker, accusing McCain of siding with Democrats on immigration, defunding Obamacare, the debt ceiling, gun rights, and judicial nominees.

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/df/Richard_Shelby%2C_official_portrait%2C_112th_Congr ess.jpg/330px-Richard_Shelby%2C_official_portrait%2C_112th_Congr ess.jpg

You might compare Alabama's Richard Shelby to Mississippi’s Thad Cochran, a veteran Southern politician who nearly lost his primary this year after going head to head with tea partiers in the state.

Political observers in this deeply conservative state say they think Cochran's battle with the tea party was a real eye-opener for Shelby. The lawmaker has recently emphasized his opposition to Common Core and comprehensive immigration reform, two big issues to the grassroots.

Shelby, a former Southern Democrat who switched to the Republican Party in 1994, is hardly representative of the tea party movement. A longtime appropriator, Shelby has a penchant for steering federal dollars back home and getting buildings named after himself.

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d6/Lisa_Murkowski.jpg/330px-Lisa_Murkowski.jpg

Sen. Lisa Murkowski could again be a tea party target in 2016.

Murkowski was a top tea party target in 2010. And conservative grassroots nearly got her.

After challenger Joe Miller defeated the Republican incumbent in the primary that year, Murkowski organized an impressive write-in campaign, and won the general election.

Four years later, some tea partiers still want to see her gone. But for now, it's not yet clear who could mount a serious challenge to her.

Still, pollsters acknowledge that the threat is real.

"It seems like she could potentially struggle again in a Republican primary if someone on the right decided to challenge her," according to a recent Public Policy Polling analysis.

Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/01/Johnny_Isakson.jpg/330px-Johnny_Isakson.jpg

When Georgia's Isakson publicly said he would run for re-election, the political website Conservative Review listed why the senator isn't "a conservative in good standing."

The organization, apparently trying to gin up support for a conservative alternative to challenge the senator, is criticizing Isakson for supporting Common Core, voting for taxpayer funded bailouts, scoffing at the defund effort, and voting to increase the debt ceiling.

"Sen. Isakson is not a conservative," Conservative Review spokeswoman Rachel Semmel said. "Like many in Congress who campaign on conservative talking points, or make politically expedient statements, there are things Isakson may point to in an effort to say that he is conservative, but his record tells a drastically different story."

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/79/Marco_Rubio%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congress .jpg/330px-Marco_Rubio%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congress .jpg

Rubio says he will either run for president or for re-election in 2016, but hasn't announced which office he will seek yet.

If he runs for Senate, it's possible the Florida Republican could face a conservative primary challenger. Though elected during the tea party wave of 2010, Rubio irked some in the base by pushing a comprehensive immigration reform bill in 2013.

During the immigration debate, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called for Rubio to face a primary challenge. That same year, former Rep. Allen West even suggested in a radio interview that he could challenge Rubio.

New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1f/Kelly_Ayotte%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congres s_2.jpg/330px-Kelly_Ayotte%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congres s_2.jpg

Like she did with Rubio, Sarah Palin called for this New Hampshire senator to face a Republican challenger during the immigration debate. "I think that they should be challenged," Palin said in a 2013 radio interview. "I don't have a problem with heated debates and contested primaries where they have to answer to constituents regarding their flip-flopping on such a fundamental position as amnesty for illegal immigrants."

Ayotte supported the Gang of Eight immigration bill in 2013.

Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/20/Roy_Blunt%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congress.j pg/330px-Roy_Blunt%2C_Official_Portrait%2C_112th_Congress.j pg

Another senator fingered by conservatives as a potential primary target is Roy Blunt, a former member of the GOP House leadership who was elected to the Senate in 2010.

"Conservatives would love to see a strong, viable challenger take on Roy Blunt," says Bill Hennessy, the co-founder of the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition. "He's reliably conservative on pro-life, somewhat on Second Amendment, and open to best offer on everything else. Blunt has been a disaster on Internet taxes, privacy issues, and cronyism."

North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c9/Richard_Burr_Official_Picture_2.jpg/330px-Richard_Burr_Official_Picture_2.jpg

Sen. Richard Burr is up for re-election in 2016.

The North Carolina senator got on the bad side of some conservatives by memorably speaking out against the Ted Cruz-Mike Lee defund Obamacare strategy, which led to the shutdown of the government, as the "dumbest idea."

He's hardly a hero of national Republicans. Burr, who says he is running for re-election, has just a 58 percent score from the conservative Heritage Action.

One well-known commodity who could run against Burr is Greg Brannon, the libertarian-leaning Republican who ran for the Senate this year but lost to opponent Thom Tillis.

Because they voted for him and Romney? The Tea Party likes to rally around the idea of "small government conservatism", especially on the issue of economics, but yet continue to rally around Republican politicians who want to continue to spend money on military adventurism.

This is fascinating to me and i'm grateful to be given a run down of the origins of the Tea Party. How and when would you say the Tea Party went from it's libertarian roots to what we see today? Was it just the aggressive foreign policy republicans joining and changing the discourse of the Tea Party movement? I've been reading a lot about the tea party of late and it's tough to get a proper picture of it coming from abroad as I wasn't entirely aware of it during the time.

glad i can shed some light on this for you. many here can tell you the same story i am going to say as they witnessed it to. id have to say the change from original intent to the shit you see today started in 2009. glen beck was one of the first to pretend he was a tea party guy and that he had done all he could to be a real freedom lover. he would go out of his way to trash ron paul, but then the very next day he would say the same things ron was saying and NEVER give credit to him, yet act as though HE himself said these things. the first real attempt of BS came on becks show when he was at a tea party rally, (right as the average person started being aware of it) and had ted nugent there as a guest playing his guitar. the show was good, but unless you knew the true way and intent of most of those people in the audience, an average person might think this was all new (in 2009) and that beck was always like this.

then during this same time frame, shawn hannity, rush limbaugh, and major GOP war hawks started pretending to be tea party as well. it was literally just a few weeks later that our original intent was so watered down by the talking heads on TV and in the government, that it no longer was true to the meaning of real freedom, yet was now a hollow, fake, war hawk in disguise beauty pageant for any politician or media guy to grab onto and the general masses never knew the difference.

i remember around 2011 some media guy said the tea party started in 2009 with some politician i cant recall their name atm....but i was so furious when i heard that because not only was it not true, but the hosts of the show and their staff and the news station as a whole, knew better, yet chose to further ignore the name of ron paul. and it isnt about rons name being ignored as much as it is, them taking credit away and rewriting history so they can use it for the establishments agenda.

its so funny to me that romney, huntsman, huckabee, santorum and many others will say they are for the tea party, knowing full well how it started, yet they were the very ones who lied cheated and stole to burry the real meaning of it to further themselves. the only one in that group who ran in 2008-2012, who can kinda claim tea party leanings is michelle bachmann. BUT in short time, she revealed her true colors and turned on ron and the message. ron actually scolded her in a live debate once over bombing iran. i felt bad for him because you could tell he didnt like doing that, but he had to tell the truth. and oh yeah, ron actually helped bachmann get elected a few years before this, so once again, she knew better than to turn on him.

but by the time 2010 rolled around, man y in the original movement, like myself, pulled out. the message wasnt the same. it wasnt the same thanks to the gop and media taking it over for their own gain.

in the beginning, when i saw a dont tread on me car tag or bumper sticker, most times i always knew they were one of us. we would always wave or honk. it was a rush. then around 2009, that changed as well. now that snake is just a generalized symbol of "something cool" just like having a magnetic ribbon on your car for "whatever is cool right now".

quote me on all of this anywhere you see fit to paste it. this is a true version of what i saw. it would be nice to have others read just one persons view point.

Thanks very much for this SatchelMcqueen! If i could find how to send some rep your way i would.

I've read plenty of different accounts of the origins of the Tea Party and some put it down to Rick Santelli but I always thought the core message was libertarian and from Ron, until it got hijacked so it's good to get an account of someone who was there at the time. Seems like a proper legacy of the 2008 campaign until Glen Beck got his paws on it. Seems like protest movements message gets diluted or taken over and lose what made it in the first place.
