Jonathan Stickland is not the only one in the Texas legislature pushing for expanded gun freedom, although his bill is no doubt best. At least2 other Reps have already introduced open carry bills for this session.

At least three new pieces of legislation seeking to reform the Lone Star State’s firearms carry laws have been filed for the upcoming session.
These bills, to include two addressing open carry and a third for constitutional carry, are backed by Republican lawmakers in the wake of Governor-elect Greg Abbott’s public announcement (http://www.guns.com/2014/11/06/new-texas-governor-says-hell-sign-open-carry-bill/) last week to sign such measures should they make it to his desk in Austin.
“If the state of Vermont not only has open-carry but it has constitutional-carry, and everyone talks about how blue the state of Vermont is, surely in the big ‘red state’ of Texas, we can have open-carry,” Rep. James White (R) told Texas Public Radio (http://tpr.org/post/republicans-austin-vow-pass-bill-open-carry-state).
White is the sponsor of HB 164 (http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/84R/billtext/pdf/HB00164I.pdf#navpanes=0), which he entered into the early filing period for the next legislative session scheduled to begin in two months. That measure would restructure the state’s gun laws to allow those with concealed carry permits to also openly carry.
A second measure that has been filed, HB 106, (http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/84R/billtext/pdf/HB00106I.pdf#navpanes=0) sponsored by Rep. Dan Flynn (R) likewise would allow licensed open carry.
Texas is one of just six states that do not allow the public carry of modern handguns. This leaves lawful gun owners in the state who do not carry concealed with a permit the option of either arming themselves with a primitive black-powder handgun or a long arm such as a rifle or shotgun.
In addition to the host of budding open carry laws, Rep. Jonathan Strickland (R) has introduced HB 195 (http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/84R/billtext/pdf/HB00195I.pdf#navpanes=0) that would strike the state’s framework for a concealed carry permit entirely. This would allow all adults otherwise lawfully able to possess a firearm under federal and Texas laws to carry one concealed without a permit.
This move, commonly called constitutional carry, would elevate the state to the same club that Vermont, Arizona, Alaska and Wyoming have joined in the past generation.
Strickland, a tea party conservative who represents Tarrant County, home to one of the most controversial open carry groups (http://www.guns.com/search/?q=open+carry+tarrant) in the state, posted (https://www.facebook.com/votejs/photos/a.254164678002127.61469.182912205127375/727523470666243/?type=1) Monday on his social media account that he filed the constitutional carry bill, “because every Texan should have the right to keep and bear arms.”
In response to the renewed push for expanded carry rights in Texas, a national gun control group that has strongly opposed current laws quickly fired back.
“Don’t put the cart before the horse — Texas, let’s get some comprehensive background checks laws into place before we start expanding Open Carry, ‘kay? It’s just makes better ‪#‎gunsense‬, don’t you think?,” Moms’s Demand Action’s state chapter said on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MomsDemandActionTX/posts/374425429349187) Monday.
The state 84th Legislative session begins on Jan. 13. Following this month’s election results, Republicans now enjoy a 19 to 13 margin of seats in the Texas Senate and 98 to 52 margin in the House after winning significant gains in both.

Yup, sadly looks like that won't happen. But one Rep told one of my friends, that even Straus may not oppose open carry from coming to a vote this year. But this Rep added that he feared some of the recent actions by open carry groups may have changed the legislative environment for the worse.

Told mine that you can either pass it and those open carry guys go away, or not pass it and they will be around until you do.

The days of the TSRA *Texas State Rifle Assm.) being the sole voice of Texas gun owners are close to an end - don't pass open carry and the TRSA is loses influence as ineffective.

Hopefully no one stops until Constitutional Carry passes. The TSRA and NRA suck. I don't know if you saw my thread on Rep elect Tony Tinderholt in the Texas subforum, but it looks like he will be going to bat for us very strongly.

Lol! :p Actually, 2 of the most Conservative Reps in Texas are black. This one (James White) and Scott Turner, the conservative challenger to Joe Straus for Speaker.

I am an active member of Open Carry Texas, and it is our group that helped draft the legislation HB 195 "Constitutional Carry" . We have 18k members in our group https://www.facebook.com/groups/opencarrytexas/ and we are actively pushing legislators towards HB 195 and telling them not to support the licensed carry bills.
Recently a CHL instructor was on TV saying he opposed constitutional carry, and it was obviously biased because his income depends on State fees from the CHL tax Texas forces on those who wish to carry. This is going to be a factor, but not a major one since there are more people for Constitutional carry than there are CHL instructors.

This is why we need the DoJ in Texas straight away to do something about those black people representing other races.
