When the next Congress convenes in January, Petri will be replaced by one Glenn Grothman, a 59-year-old Tea Party firebrand who attracts headlines the way that character in “Charlie Brown” draws dirt. Grothman has called for the elimination of the African American-themed holiday Kwanzaa—which he says should be treated with “contempt”—and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which he has called an “insult.”

In Georgia, there is Jody Hice, a radio show host who has said Muslims don’t deserve First Amendment rights. From North Carolina we will hear from Mark Walker, a pastor who has suggested invading Mexico as a way to address the influx of undocumented immigrants across the border. And in Montana, there is Ryan Zinke, who calls Hillary Clinton “the anti-Christ.”

Last year, Boehner denounced King for saying undocumented immigrants are drug smugglers who have “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’ve been hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.” And Bachmann, recall, in her quixotic 2012 run for the presidency, delighted in embarrassing eventual nominee Mitt Romney—among others, like Newt Gingrich—at one point mocking them together as “NewtRomney,” in other words corrupt Big Government insiders.
