So I'm checking out a Christmas catalog and under a bunch of Black Licorice items it says they don't ship to California. !

Apparently when Proposition 65 passed to keep the water clean the bill contained other items.

A bit more info on the topic:

A Short Explanation of California Proposition 65

California law contains what is known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act also referred to as Proposition 65 (Prop 65). Prop 65 requires the State of California to publish and maintain a list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

The list contains over 900 substances. The most recent list and other Prop 65 information are available on California's web site: http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65.html.

Prop 65 requires products sold in California to bear warnings about potential exposure to any of the substances listed by the state of California. Prop 65's warning provision is required for any product (food or non-food) that exposes an individual in California to any detectable amount of a listed substance "known to the state" to cause cancer and/or reproductive harm.

Prop 65 does not ban any products; it simply requires warnings.

Warning: Black licorice products contain a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or reproductive harm.

It is not that they can't sell- they just can't sell without a warning. (the Prop 65 warning system is worthless- it lists items without any consideration for potentially hazardous levels which in some cases can be very high- much more than a normal person might consume or be exposed to).

It seems like there are so many things that cause cancer in the state of California I'm glad I don't live there.

Seems that some companies are refusing to send red licorice too.

They got the real Root Beer years ago. I think Frosty Root Beer was my favorite.

Now I better get out and see if I can still score some Good and Plenty.

so you're complaining that there's a law warning people about carcinogens? you better not be the same person that wants a law warning about GMOs.

Californians overall fancy themselves as environmentalists but thanks to them nearly every product we buy that comes with an operator's manual means there are extra pages with disclaimers for their retarded laws.
