Florida woman arrested after shooting at snake on school grounds

A Panama City woman who tried to shoot a water moccasin during practice for a youth football team was arrested for discharging the gun on school property.

Police say 30-year-old April Dawn DeMarco borrowed a gun from Miren Gregory after the snake was spotted last week on a Bay High School field. As coaches tried to kill the snake with a stick, Gregory told DeMarco she had a concealed permit and a .380-caliber handgun.

The News Herald of Panama City reports children were about 20 to 50 yards away when Demarco fired the gun.

She was arrested Monday. Gregory was arrested Tuesday for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm on school property. It's not clear whether they've hired lawyers.

Police didn't know the fate of the snake.

It's unclear from the article whether the children were ever in danger. Could the snakes fangs actually penetrate all of the bubble wrap the helicopter parents had wrapped their babies in? Was there a police canine involved? Were the use of tasers threatened against non-compliant mothers?

For some reason the proximity of children never seems to be an issue when cops shoot dogs.

The newswire story was a little light. Here's the link to the local paper.

Woman shoots at snake and lands in jail (http://www.newsherald.com/news/crime-public-safety/woman-shoots-at-snake-and-lands-in-jail-1.387442)

A Panama City woman has been taken to jail after allegedly trying to gun down a snake on a local school campus.

Opening line. No way the word choice shows that this reporter has an agenda.

One parent forewarned the women that having a firearm on school grounds was against the law when DeMarco said, “I will take the blame,” the parent told police.

DeMarco told police she had the gun on school grounds and shot it there to protect the children, herself being a parent, police reported.

If the DA tries to prosecute this one s/he should be run out on a rail next election.

A ricocheting bullet from missing the target is far more dangerous than the snake itself.

No wonder so many football recruits come out of Florida. I didn't realize they practice on concrete fields. Man, that's tough!

In a PC world she probably should have just chopped the snake's head off.

"Gun down a snake"?

They usually reserve gun down for special occasions. This snake must have actually been the rattlesnake from the Gadsden flag.
