Huckabee’s Stature Rises, Mobilizing Tax Critics

As Mike Huckabee rises in the Republican presidential polls, fiscal conservatives have been raising alarms about a series of tax increases he oversaw while governor of Arkansas — new taxes on gasoline, nursing home beds and even pet groomers.

The Club for Growth, a politically influential antitax group, has dubbed Mr. Huckabee Tax Hike Mike and poured money into anti-Huckabee advertisements that were broadcast in early nominating states, with more on the way. Mr. Huckabee “spends money like a drunken sailor,” according to the group’s news releases, and it has sprinkled YouTube and the airways with videos that mock him and his policies.

What happened: Accused during a debate Wednesday of raising taxes, Huckabee left the impression that he raised only one. "I was governor nearly 11 years, and in that time I cut 90 taxes," he said. "Over that period of time, the income tax remained exactly what it was. The sales tax is one penny higher."

Why that's wrong: While he did preside over many tax reductions, he failed to mention the 21 tax increases on his watch. Factcheck.org says he presided over a net tax increase. The newspaper Arkansas Democrat-Gazette says the state's taxes went up by $505 million in one year, adjusted for inflation, and that the average Arkansan's tax burden went from $1,969 to $2,902.

Penalty: Five yards off his credibility — and one tax deduction.

I agree 100%!

Hopefully our moderators will see the merit in leaving this thread in Ron Paul Grassroots so that people will see it; they have a tendency to try to shove this information on Huckabee under the rug in one of the sub forums.

But Congressman Ron Paul says that Mike Huckabee and people like him are flat wrong. And I stand by Ron Paul. And if getting out Ron Paul's message isn't Ron Paul Grassroots, then I don't think I know what is.

So let's keep loading this thread full of information and talking points and arm and equip as many of are supporters as we can.
