'You can either make history or be vilified by it': Leo DiCaprio lectures UN on climate change (but no mention of his four homes, private jets and renting the FIFTH biggest yacht in the world from an OIL billionaire)

By Michael Zennie

Leonardo DiCaprio has positioned himself as one of the highest-profile climate change activists in the world
He told the United Nations today: 'You can make history ...or be vilified by it'
DiCaprio, worth an estimated $220million, flew to France twice, London, Tokyo and several trips between New York and Los Angeles
The A-list star drives a Toyota Prius and an electric car and bought an eco-friendly apartment building in New York
However, even if he took only commercial flights his plane travel spewed 40million metric tons of carbon into the air

With his speech in front of the United Nations today, Leonardo DiCaprio cemented his reputation as one of the world's highest-profile activists on climate change.

'You can make history ...or be vilified by it,' he told world leaders.

After marching with 400,000 others on the streets of New York this weekend to demand tough regulations to cut the amount of CO2 being pumped into the air, DiCaprio opened a UN climate change summit by urging world leaders to crack down on polluters and 'put a price tag on carbon emissions.'

But the 39-year-old Hollywood star's own jetset lifestyle reveals a double-standard on the issue of climate change.

In his speech to the UN, he said: 'This disaster has grown beyond the choices that individuals make.'

MailOnline can report that DiCaprio took at least 20 trips across the nation and around the world this year alone - including numerous flights from New York to Los Angeles and back, a ski vacation to the French Alps, another vacation to the French Riveria, flights to London and Tokoyo to promote his film Wolf of Wall Street, two trips to Miami and a private jet to Brazil to watch the World Cup.

They need to invent a new word, hypocrite just doesn't cover it.

The world's fattest Lady telling some 110 pound gal that she would have to cut her calories or suffer criminal, civil and financial penalties from laws coercing her to slim down pales in comparison to Leonardo DiCaprio telling me that I have to reduce my 'carbon footprint' or suffer criminal, civil and financial penalties if I don't.

West Coast warming linked to naturally occurring changes

Naturally occurring changes in winds, not human-caused climate change, are responsible for most of the warming on land and in the sea along the West Coast of North America over the last century, a study has found.

The analysis challenges assumptions that the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been a significant driver of the increase in temperatures observed over many decades in the ocean and along the coastline from Alaska to California.

A cleaner environment and cleaner energy sounds good to me. I'm sure DiCaprio would happily participate in converting to more clean energy vehicles even including his yacht.

We need to put a pricetag on carbon emissions, and eliminate government subsidies for coal, gas, and oil companies. We need to end the free ride that industrial polluters have been given in the name of a free-market economy, they don't deserve our tax dollars, they deserve our scrutiny. For the economy itself will die if our eco-systems collapse.

He does have a point here, even though I'm unsure about the price tag part, but why not withdraw government involvement in this part of the market? My only concern is he would like to see Government stay involved in the role distributing penalties for carbon.

IMO his real Fail here is he has all this wealth he could be using to bankroll energy research himself and bring something to the table besides a speech.

I'm not calling Leo a hypocrite. Much of his travel is an extension of his professional business life. He is right that we need to pursue clean energy.

However, I'm disappointed that he doesn't come to the table with something of more substance. He could form his own R&D group and bring innovations to us.

You have got to be kidding me.
I think that man made global warming is a bunch of horse crap, but I would accept the restrictions imposed by Leonardo if he said that nobody could put anymore CO2 in the atmosphere than he does per annum just to shut him up.
Saying that others (me) have to lower our 'carbon footprint' while he lives a lifestyle that puts more CO2 up there in a month than I have put up there in my lifetime is the dictionary definition of a hypocrite.

I record every penny I spend on my computer since retiring and what I spent it on.

Since 01/01/2013,well over a year and a half ago,I have spent $650.14 on gas for my only mode of transportation,my 4WD V-8 full size Dodge pickup truck.
No planes, trains or busses or anything else whatsoever.

That wouldn't fuel Leonardo's yacht for an hour and he is going to bitch about my pickup???

Yes, not only is he going to bitch about it, he is going to use his position as a public figure to agitate government to pass laws to regulate or prohibit you from driving, replacing or modifying that truck.

Which, ultimately, means that enforcement will bring men with guns to deliver violence unto you for failure to comply.

People like 56ktarget will tell me that I'm being ridiculous and engaging in hyperbole, that "no cop is going to shoot you for environmental compliance".

And I would direct him to the thread that shows a cop shooting an unarmed man for what amounted to a seatbelt violation.

Copsuckers and statists: do not sit there and try to tell me where this will all head, this is the controller's wet dream, everything a human being does has carbon impact.

Thus NOTHING will be beyond the limit of the international regulators enforcement and scrutiny and surveillance.

Unless, of course, you're rich, well connected or have celebrity or "special" status. Like a cop. Or a movie star.

Cops are not going to stop driving 2 MPG tanks when they are looking to smash your walls, and movie stars are not giving up their yachts.

Ron Paul is rich.

"Rich" is relative.

By my metric he is quite rich.

No, having a yacht does not make one a liar or hypocrite.

Lecturing and hectoring government that they need to more tightly regulate people and restrict even more freedom, in the name of "environmentalism", while running around playing on a yacht that burns more fuel in a day than most people will burn in their cars in a year, is massively hypocritical.

Arguments over global warming and terrorism…

Don’t get tricked into arguments over whether there is bad weather or bad human behavior in the world, because you won’t win. These problems do indeed exist. Stick to the main argument, against “solutions” offered by government that are self-defeating and anti-liberty. By pointing out the unintended consequences (externalities) of the government policy/regulation/aggression, it’s a pretty easy argument to win.

With AGW or “Climate Change”, you let your opponent elaborate in length to “prove” it exists, then merely refocus on their actual point; they want more government regulation into business. Besides pointing out violations of individual rights, also explain how increasing regulations on business also increases costs – and higher costs mean more energy usage, which means more pollution.

Flashback:

An offer they couldn't refuse
The CIA is often credited with 'advice' on Hollywood films, but no one is truly sure about the extent of its shadowy involvement. Matthew Alford and Robbie Graham investigate

Matthew Alford and Robbie Graham
The Guardian, Thursday 13 November 2008

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/pictures/2008/09/30/bodyoflies460.jpg

Everyone who watches films knows about Hollywood's fascination with spies. From Hitchcock's postwar espionage thrillers, through cold war tales such as Torn Curtain, into the paranoid 1970s when the CIA came to be seen as an agency out of control in films such as Three Days of the Condor, and right to the present, with the Bourne trilogy and Ridley Scott's forthcoming Body of Lies, film-makers have always wanted to get in bed with spies. What's less widely known is how much the spies have wanted to get in bed with the film-makers. In fact, the story of the CIA's involvement in Hollywood is a tale of deception and subversion that would seem improbable if it were put on screen.

The model for this is the defence department's "open" but barely publicised relationship with Hollywood. The Pentagon, for decades, has offered film-makers advice, manpower and even hardware - including aircraft carriers and state-of-the-art helicopters. All it asks for in exchange is that the US armed forces are made to look good. So in a previous Scott film, Black Hawk Down, a character based on a real-life soldier who had also been a child rapist lost that part of his backstory when he came to the screen.

No matter how seemingly craven Hollywood's behaviour towards the US armed forces has seemed, it has at least happened within the public domain. That cannot be said for the CIA's dealings with the movie business. Not until 1996 did the CIA announce, with little fanfare, that it had established an Entertainment Liaison Office, which would collaborate in a strictly advisory capacity with film-makers. Heading up the office was Chase Brandon, who had served for 25 years in the agency's elite clandestine services division, as an undercover operations officer. A PR man he isn't, though he does have Hollywood connections: he's a cousin of Tommy Lee Jones.

But the past 12 years of semi-acknowledged collaboration were preceded by decades in which the CIA maintained a deep-rooted but invisible influence of Hollywood. How could it be otherwise? As the former CIA man Bob Baer - whose books on his time with the agency were the basis for Syriana - told us: "All these people that run studios - they go to Washington, they hang around with senators, they hang around with CIA directors, and everybody's on board."
