Here’s why Justin Amash and Thomas Massie say arming the Syrian rebels is a huge no-no

Reps. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) explained why they voted against the recent House amendment to arm and train the Syrian rebels at the Liberty Political Action Conference (LPAC) Alexandria, Virginia, Thursday.

Amash believes — as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) does — that the amendment, which passed in the House 253-156, will create more chaos in the region.

Amash also called for a repeal of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).

“If we need another Authorization for Use of Military Force or declaration of war it should have an expiration date. Not because we want to tell our enemy when we’re leaving, but because Congress needs to maintain control of the situation [rather than the president],” he said.

Thomas Massie doubled-down on Amash’s view, saying “Everybody in Congress that voted for that is culpable.”

Massie also pointed out the hypocrisy of Congress concerning the upcoming continuing resolution (CR). You may recall that last year Democrats called repeatedly for a “clean CR,” while Republicans weighed that down with an effort to defund Obamacare.
