The Bronx cop who drove the wrong way on the state Thruway and crashed into an SUV, killing himself and the other driver, was drunk, state police said Wednesday.

Police Officer Richard Christopher’s blood-alcohol content was .21% at the time of his death on Aug. 12, according to autopsy findings revealed by the Rockland County Medical Examiner’s office — well over the legal limit of 0.08%.

Christopher, 32, was off-duty and driving his Dodge Dakota pick-up south “in the northbound lanes of I-87 for unknown reasons” when he hit 59-year-old James DeVito’s Honda CRV.

Witnesses told police they saw Christopher driving north on the New York State Thruway. He pulled over to the right side of the roadway then headed south, witnesses said.

There were no alcohol or drugs in DeVito’s system, an autopsy revealed.

Christopher was an eight-year veteran of the force assigned to the 43rd Precinct in Parkchester.

Police get drunk and do bad things, just like people from every other profession. In fact, it is likely more common with police than the average profession.
