SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A young black man who was fatally shot last week by Utah police lunged at the officers with a real sword that had a 2.5-foot steel blade, prosecutors said Monday.

Reports from Darrien Hunt's family that the 22-year-old was carrying a toy sword are not accurate, said Utah County Chief Deputy Attorney Tim Taylor.

"It wasn't plastic, it wasn't wood," Taylor said. "It appears to be a real samurai sword."

The Saratoga Springs Police Department is under fire over the fatal shooting of Hunt last Wednesday. The city removed a critical social media posting that accused the news media of reporting innuendo, opinion and rumor as fact with the police chief apologizing for the remarks.

Hunt's mother has accused police of shooting her son because he is black. Police say race played no role.

An attorney for the family says an independent autopsy shows Hunt was shot six times while running away.

Taylor said investigators are talking with witnesses and gathering surveillance video from the strip mall to piece together what happened. There are at least three businesses nearby where the shooting occurred that may have surveillance cameras that captured moments of the encounter, he said.

The shooting is being reviewed by a coalition of investigators from different agencies who review officer involved shootings under the direction of Taylor's office, Jackson said. The two officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

The social media post Sunday, around the same time more than 100 people gathered at a candlelight vigil for Hunt, only brought more attention to the shooting. On the police department's Facebook page, they asked for the public to be patient and rejected the notion that there was a cover-up.

"Everyone should remember that the news outlets have ratings they need to gain. They don't report facts. They use innuendo, opinion and rumor and then report it as fact," the post said. "The real facts are being determined by an independent investigation, and not in a rushed or haphazard manner."

Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andrew Burton on Monday apologized for the post, asking again for patience and understanding from the public and the news media as they work their way through an extremely complicated investigation. He said in a statement that their frustration about not being able to answer questions about the incident led to the post.

Randall Edwards, an attorney for the family of Darrien Hunt, called it a foolish statement to make but said accusing the media of a bias when the facts aren't on your side is a common response.

"There are a lot of raw emotions over this very intense thing. You're going to have people who are going to make statements that later on reflection they are going to wish they hadn't made," Edwards told The Associated Press.

Edwards said an independent autopsy requested by the family shows Hunt was shot six times, all from behind, which he said demonstrates that Hunt was running away. He said Hunt died from a bullet that hit him square in the back.

Taylor declined to comment on that autopsy, saying investigators are waiting to see the results of an autopsy done by the state medical examiner.

Police say the shooting happened Wednesday morning after they were called to investigate a "suspicious" man walking near businesses while carrying a "samurai-type sword."

If the facts have yet to be determined, then not arresting the officer means they could be letting a killer out on the streets.

I like how EVERY SINGLE dead guy who's running away....."LUNGED" at the officer.

"We Killed that guy!! Now what!?!"

"..just say he lunged at you...and go on vacation for a few weeks.."

Done. Use of force justified...

He was obviously running away while firing rounds from his assault-style sword back at the officers.

Justified.

I've got some intel that there are about to be some Ferguson-style protests in several cities across Utah in response to the violent police state. Looks like the tide has turned and the freedom movement has reached critical mass.

Officer involved in death of young black man warned of drugs linked to Rasta culture

A police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a young black man in Utah wrote an article warning parents that their children might be taking drugs if they showed a particularly deep interest in Rastafarian culture or dance music.

Corporal Matthew Schauerhamer, who has been placed on paid leave following the death of Darrien Hunt, posted an essay online offering advice on how to recognise if a child is “descending into the culture and subcultures that drug users associate with”.

Schauerhamer, 32, told parents that if their son or daughter was fanatical about Bob Marley and wore a red, yellow and green Rastafarian-style hat, it was a strong indication of drug use.

Bob Marley and his music are sublime to some people. Just because you have an entire archive on your iPod that is specifically dedicated to Bob Marley, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a drug user. Having George Strait’s greatest hits on your iPod doesn’t mean you’re a cowboy.

However, if your child is listening to Bob Marley’s Kaya, is wearing a Bob Marley shirt with Bob Marley on it smoking a joint, has a Bob Marley poster in his room, and is wearing a Rasta hat (red, yellow and green), it is highly likely your child is highly high. If they have Rasta colored anything, it is a good bet your child uses or hangs out with drug users.

Oh, and by the way – if your child hangs out with drug users, your child’s probability of being a drug user goes up exponentially.

Different music subcultures are so closely related to drug use that advertising the music is like advertising the drugs themselves. Artists such as Wiz Khalifa is the modern-day poster boy for weed. Lil Wayne is infamous for codeine abuse also known as “Sizzurp or purple drank.”

The Insane Clown Posse, with its “Juggalo and Jugalette” parishioners, are associated with basically any drug ever used, ever. They have such predominant, mainstreamed drug abuse tones and references in their music that it is impossible to ignore their overt advertisement of drug lifestyles.

He designed a graphical representation of “the thin blue line”, the nickname commonly given to the police, describing this in a caption as “the line between good and evil”.

I have a black belt in Korean Sword and I choreograph many sword fights for different stage & film productions. I could easily be walking down the street carrying a sword and be shot under this ridiculous scenario.

Also, most swords- even if steel, are not "real swords". In stage production we buy swords that can "bash" against each other or look good on stage, but they would not last in any real fight. Dollar to cop-donuts, this is what the guy was carrying.

Not to mention that I love Bob Marley- and never touch drugs.

The mother of Darrien Hunt — the sword-carrying man shot and killed in September by Saratoga Springs police — is now facing misdemeanor criminal charges for an alleged dustup with officers from the same police department that fatally wounded her son, state court records show.

Susan Hunt was charged Wednesday in Saratoga Springs Justice Court with four counts: interference with an arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor; and failure to disperse and driving on a denied license, both class C misdemeanors. The 51-year-old mother is also charged with one count of disorderly conduct, an infraction.

In a Nov. 1 story published by the Tribune, Saratoga Springs police spokesman Owen Jackson confirmed Hunt was being investigated by Utah County sheriff’s deputies for an Oct. 19 incident with two city police officers in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The findings of the investigation were referred back to Saratoga Springs police and the city’s prosecutor to consider any potential charges.

Jackson declined to provide any details about Hunt’s interactions with police. However, according to a KUTV news report of the incident, Hunt allegedly pulled up behind two officers who were conducting an unrelated traffic stop and began to verbally and physically assault them.

“I find that Saratoga Springs Cpl. Matthew Schauerhamer and Officer Nicholas Judson were justified in their use of deadly force against Mr. Hunt,” said Buhman. “Their belief that deadly force was necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury was reasonable.”
