Unfortunately our time on the DP will come to end. Those who wish to stay in contact should gather here. It would be nice if you keep your call name. Or perhaps you'll want to start fresh with a new one.

Welcome "newbies".

For those who have been here a while. Thanks for having us!

Well, you'll find a home here, as long as your skin isn't too thin. This can be a rough crowd at times. I've heard many people who prefer DP over RPFs say that the membership here is too cynical, suspicious, and tough. May be. But there is truth here. And lifelong friendships to be had.

I joined both about the same time. Never have liked the reddit, DP, DU format message boards.

I much prefer this style of linear conversation.

And the people here may be tougher, but conversely some people need to lighten up, and some just need to learn when to let go.

All around, more people need to learn how to disagree without being assholes.

I've actually been here a little while. But I tend to spend more time at the DP. Only because for some reason I feel it's easier to navigate.

The most important thing to know for navigating the site is the New Posts (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?211712-How-to-most-efficiently-read-the-forums) button, without that you are going to have a very difficult time. But I think you already know about that.

Beyond that I do think the site could be improved by simplifying the main index page and cutting down on a few of the subforums which I believe are redundant, a little bit confusing, and not used very much. Is this some of what you are referring to perhaps? Would be interested to hear if you have suggestions.

He is kind of tired of running the site, but he is acting more open to keeping it up now, after everyone there was so upset. He might hand it over, or partially hand it over to someone else. There is no telling. He's a good guy, but he doesn't exactly fit in very well on his own site:)

From what I can tell, Nystrom doesn't want to sell it and doesn't want to keep it going. Also from what I can tell is that it seems he doesn't support Rand and that's the main reason for it.

Hi, this is TwelveOhOne from DailyPaul.com. I hope that site never closes but the writing is starting to bleed on the wall, so like Eddy Murphy I will listen when they scream "getttt ouuuuutttt!" 1/2 :)

Even if it's a house that we largely helped to create. Not myself personally, I'm thinking more of fishyculture, emalvini, go213mph, PHREEDOM, The South, AnCapMercenary, and many many others who regularly ("Daily!!") brought news to the site that Michael had at one point started, and is now choosing to blow up.

I am saddened that the house I have lived in for a few years is to be demolished. But if it is, I'm glad to be able to join my existing friends here, and make new ones as well!

This thread is a good spot to try this, I suppose. There seems to be a market for it.

The New Posts button is a good thing to find. You don't get as much information there as you do by going in through the subforums, like you don't get to see if a thread is rated (much less how many stars it gets) but it shows you what you haven't seen yet from every subforum on the board.

When posting new threads, please take a moment to look over the list of subforums and pick the right one to post in. For that menu, click Ron on the banner at the top of the page. Don't be insulted if the mods move it later. It makes them feel useful, so humor them. But before posting, please do search and see if something has already been posted on the specific topic before. But be forewarned, the search function sucks really, really hard. Best bet is to take the most unusual word in the article you want to post, like someone's name, and search for that. The box by the little magnifying glass searches the whole board; if you want to search a specific thread, speed things up by going there and clicking 'Search (this) Thread'.

In the bottom left corner of each post are a six pointed star and a triangle. The triangle is for reporting spammers, insults, inflammatory behavior and the like. Only the mods see those. The star is the reputation button. You can use that to either give someone strokes or slap them upside the head. You can see your reputation received, your total and the strength at which you build up the rep score of others by clicking 'Settings' at the top of the page. At first, getting + reps just gives you little green pips under your user name. Once you have all eleven of those, you start building up muscle.

That is the page where you set up signatures and avatars, and is a handy place to go to get at the private message system. There are certain things you can only do if you pay for membership, like use a big gif file for an avatar or upload (as opposed to linking to) pics. There are certain other things you can't do until you make 100 posts, and graduate out of 'New Member' status.

If you want to look at your profile, use the public messaging system, find threads you started or posts you made, or a few other useful functions, click on your user name just to the left of the Settings button. The notifications button will turn red if you have any news, like reputation received, or public or private messages. Click on it when it's red and it will tell you what's new, and give you a chance to look at it. Most anything that's blue can be clicked--including usernames (clicking will allow you to visit their profile or a few other options), and thread titles (in forum menus, new posts, the rep system and elsewhere, sometimes you go to the OP and sometimes you go to a specific post). There are also little blue double arrow icons at the top of each quoted post which will take you to that post and the thread it originally appeared in. For example, you may find the threads quoted in my signature interesting, so give it a try. If there is no little blue double arrow icon, what is quoted is not another forum post (or whoever quoted that post mucked up the code).

You can change the wording of a quote. This is considered very rude unless you highlight the changes and note the fact (or you're just editing for length). FTFY stands for Fixed That For You, indicates a tongue-in-cheek 'clarification' of a quote.

The bottom right icon on each post is the multi-quote function. If you want to respond to two or more posts in one thread, click on those until you get to the last one, then click 'Reply with quote'. The system likes to throw you out when you're composing a long message. If it gives you a 'refresh and try again' message, copy your text first so you can paste it. If it throws you out and makes everything you just typed disappear too, it'll take you to a special login screen. That's good news; just log in.

I think that's enough to get you started. People are pretty good at answering questions with only a little snark around the edges mostly, so don't be shy to open your mouth and leave no doubt you're an idiot! :)

They're a little weird but they're friendly.

Hmmm...

The most important thing for me is keeping this group together. The Ark is the people, not the site itself, in my opinon.

So the Ark wasn't the boat, it was the animals? I thought God already made the animals, and wanted Noah to build an ark so they wouldn't get their feet wet.

He has great faith in his users' ability to swim collectively, doesn't he?

I suppose you have to be a libertarian to truly appreciate what a huge advantage that is.

More about searching the forum to see if some news item has been posted:

Sometimes people will keep the same title, sometimes they will change it, so it is better to search within the text.
Take about 6-10 words from a sentence in the story, and use google or startpage:

"heard about the incident when the pool revolt" site:ronpaulforums.com

RPF threads gets indexed very fast, so even new stuff posted within the same hour usually shows up in the results.

Drama we have. But it comes from the bottom up; it pretty much never comes from On High.

I suppose you have to be a libertarian to truly appreciate what a huge advantage that is.

that is VERY true.
I think it is also important that.... I think that the "rep" system keeps a lot of flak off of the mods.
(members flag the trolls)
and in some sortof weird cosmic way.... only the best trolls survive?

Haven't really been over and logged in on DP for many months, it just seemed to me that Nystrom was running that site into the ground despite it being such a hotbed of activity and such for its first 5 or so years. What's the latest? I'd get snarky but doesn't sound like I need to at this point.

Welcome to RPF from SoFlo :)

The latest? Is he or isn't he closing down the DP? While his latest post would suggest he will be closing it down, experience tells us he's just in one of his moods. Why does he do it? Attention? Fundraising perhaps? Or maybe he really is shutting her off for real this time. Who knows. I'm trying to convince some others to come over here just in case one day we go to log on and it isn't there anymore. But there are some who are hell bent on sinking with the ship when it goes down.

While I admit I was never a DP person from the outside Nystrom seems like a real crybaby...

I understand that being involved in this, taking the intellectual red pill if you will, is not at all easy and can be very burdensome. But Good Lord... you've got this gigantic following of people you've been luckily enough to bring together and influence and instead of just selling the site like Bryan did with RPFs he drags his entire base along for his emotional rollercoaster.

And I would remind him, as hard as it is, always remember the rule Ron Paul and Lew Rockwell came up with Day 1 in DC - "If we're not having fun we're not doing this right."

I understand that times are a lot different, and much more dire now, but if it's such a chore for him to deal with the stress then he should hand it over or end it...

Again... I admit I was never a DP person.

I think basically he's a politically naive person who's butthurt about the movement shifting toward Rand, and so he's decided to scuttle the ship in protest (whining all the way out).

I've had this "reprise" feeling over there, for a few months. Like the ending of "The Wizard of Speed and Time", or the begining and end of the first "Muppet Movie": all the characters are sitting in the theater, watching the movie.

That feeling is over.

Right now I feel like we're watching the credits. Unknownuser's comments about drama are sinking in. I don't need this, and in fact I'm still paying for it.

I tried to spider my user page so I wouldn't lose my posts and comments. It hasn't worked so far; if anyone has experience doing such a thing I'd appreciate pointers. I tried Heritrix and HTTrack. The former kept giving errors with default configuration; the latter ran for over a day but when browsing the backed-up site, it doesn't show up the same (likely CSS got dropped; everything is "on the left" rather than being laid out in columns).

Great to see you, HVACTech! I've missed you over at the DP.

From what I can tell all the ads that used to be there are all gone, he used to make a couple grand a month at least in ad money. The top one, usually some gold outfit, was going for 600-G$ years ago and the big ones on the right hand side were 200$+ a month. So, it's like they took some destructive turn a couple years ago when they stopped participating in fundraising for liberty candidates while doing more pushing for the LP. And, steadily their traffic has dried up from where it was because people were sick of it plus paying for a membership. While it's kinda the off season here, most people still check in and peruse but become way more active like coming up here when Rand announces his run. I joined DP in the first month it was online and then here shortly afterwards but generally thought this place had a better format so I stuck around.

the only real drawback here... is that it is very difficult to find out if someone responded to a comment. (the DP alerted you)

Oh, and a word about polls. When you post a thread with a poll, first you tell it to advertise the thread as having a poll on the menus, then you write and post, and then it asks you if you really want a poll or not.

If you see a brand new thread that claims to have a poll attached, and you find no poll within, be forewarned that the first to reply with, 'Where's the poll?' is liable to be hazed as a n00b.

People have been known to post their thread while confused as to why they haven't had a chance to set up their poll yet, and hit edit or something, and lose their chance to do it because they missed the prompt. So when posting a poll, make your post, follow the prompts, and hit this button:

Amen to that. Before I came here I posted ALOT on the freetalklive forums and I really liked them the best. Anytime someone responded to a comment you made, that response is listed in your control panel. I went from there to the DP and here and couldn't figure out for the life of me why neither forum has such a basic and valuable feature...

Even with the DP all one had to do was check in your account to see if there are any replies. That's a nice feature. Seems to make it a faster pace.

The "My recent posts" tab on Daily Paul is basically the same thing as the "Subscribed Threads with New Posts" section when you click "Settings" on RPF. The key is you have to be subscribed to the threads you would like a notification for, otherwise there will be no notification when the thread receives new posts. You can subscribe to any thread by going to Thread Tools --> Subscribe to this Thread. But most people are set up to automatically subscribe to any thread they post in (Settings --> General Settings --> Default Thread Subscription Mode --> Through my control panel only), that way they do not have to manually subscribe to every thread they post in.

So I do not really see an advantage to the Daily Paul in this regard. In fact, RPF has the additional feature that you can subscribe to threads you haven't even posted in, at Daily Paul you cannot.

I just want to know when some replies to my comment...not when some replies to a post I subscribe to. The DP is efficiant in that you can see when someone replies to you. It makes the low of communication more efficient.

I had to scroll to see that you responded to me.

OK, I see. And actually I remember now that there is a feature on Daily Paul called "Recent comment replies" that shows when you have been directly replied to.

I had to scroll to see that you responded to me.

Wouldn't you have clicked the thread anyways though, whether you knew you had been directly replied to or not? I am usually interested in following the conversation in a thread that I have already posted in, so whether or not I've been directly replied to doesn't make a difference, I still would click on it and see the newest posts. But of course everyone has different preferences and different amount of time that they can spend looking at threads. For my personal preference, that kind of feature would not even be that valuable.

BTW, if you click on the blue arrows circled in red below it should take you to the last post in the thread so you don't have to do any scrolling. Or just hit "End" on your keyboard.

That system would not work here, because each comment stands on its own. At DP a reply to someone goes right below a comment. It works differently here.

Depending on how much time I want to spend on a thread. There's a lot of content to read through in a day. Not enough time.

Exactly... If I want to see if anyone "quoted" something I said in a popular thread I literally have to look at EVERY post after mine to see if anyone responded to what I said. A simple "notice" that someone had quoted you makes it easy to keep a tit-for-tat going. Here I usually lose track of what's being said after a bit because I keep having to go to "subscribed threads" then try to find my last post there and then scan everything posted since then to see if anyone has addressed my post... I really don't want to spend that much time chasing posts. Even the old usenet worked better for following comments and replies. If some administrator wants to see how it should be done they can go to "freetalklive.com" and see how their forum works. I'm sure that same software is available and could be ported to the database of existing posts here at RPF. Freetalklive is dead now though. Hardly anyone posts there anymore because it was virtually unmoderated and the trolls took over...

Yeah and it's down hard. The "down" page says:

"The Daily Paul is currently undergoing maintenance and/or testing. During this time you cannot post articles, but you can read them. Thank you for your patience and support."

However, I can't load the site to "read them"! I also just tried Chrome (I only use Firefox to browse; lately there's been this bug where Youtube videos won't play at Youtube -- they'll play embedded at DP! -- so when I want to watch a Youtube video I'm using Chrome for now until I get up the energy to investigate), which I have never logged in with, and that won't load anything either (I was logged in, under Firefox).

So I have saved two posts that I wanted to make in a text file, waiting for it to come back up. I suppose there's no harm in "cross-posting" is there? (Although, here the initial words are "thread", there they're "post"; and to confuse issues further, the attachment to the initial words there are "comments" and here "posts" -- and, I think the DP's terminology is out of sync with the rest. So "cross-post-threading" or something? :))

Then again, is there a minimum number of posts (here) that I need to make before I can start a thread?

People cross-post between here and Daily Paul all the time, that is nothing unusual. As far as starting a thread, you should be able to do that on your very first post. I think you also need 3 posts to be able to post a link, so you should be good on that too.

Someone also mentioned not being able to access their mailbox earlier in the thread. You do need a certain number of posts to send and receive PM's, but the exact number Bryan would prefer for me not to state.

I'm able to access my mailbox. I also just posted an image link, so that worked (in here: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?466980-Time-travel-amp-Stargate-portals-are-Real-and-Exist-on-Earth-Today!&p=5758348&viewfull=1#post5758348 ).

If you would be so kind, how does one start a post? (I know at DP it's at the top right of the banner; I've looked around here and haven't seen it yet.)

Thanks in advance!

Click on the forum you want to start a thread in and you'll see a blue box in the upper left hand area that says +Post New Thread - the box will turn burgundy when you move your mouse over it. That'll open up a new box where you stick your post.:)

When posting a video link, which can be done via the second-from-the-right icon above this "Quick Reply" box, it's different from Daily Paul.

Note to others (I just put this info under another thread (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?467026-Rothschilds-own-Charlie-Once-you-know-it-s-fake-it-s-fake-what-more-is-there-to-look-into&p=5758476#post5758476), and though I should share it here), you don't want to go to the controls below the video, click "Share", then click "Embed" and paste it, as that's an "iframe". You also don't want to click "Share", then click "Share" (below it) to get the one that starts with "http://youtu.be" URL, you want the one in the browser's address bar, which starts with "https://www.youtube.com". Cheers!

Hi TwelveOhOne. justDave here from DP. My user ID was already taken here on RPF, so I chose a new (really stupid) ID. I have read RPF for years but never commented as I didn't like my user ID... thanks Brian for all the help changing my name. Anyway thanks TwelveOhOne for your posts on how to embed etc.

That's an awesome username!

You could have been a little more creative, though, and used [yourfirstname]in[yourstate]. All the cool guys do that. :p

Hi DaninPA
I used to be cool- my first username on the DP was CarlsbadDJ ... then I moved to Oceanside and stopped going to my favorite beach in Carlsbad after a huge/nasty radar dish was installed. Also, as somewhat of a wanderer, I didn't feel like changing my name every time I changed my taxation zone.

Is there any way to sticky this for some new comers. With the DP closing down in a week it would be nice to have this in front. Thanks!

I need to get used to using this site. Honestly the only reason Im not very active here is because it's hard to follow a conversation. It would be nice to get a notification when someone responds to my comment or post. This is all I ask for. Is it too much?

I don't know enough about vbulletin software to know. But if you subscribe to every thread you post in, you'll know even if they respond to you without quoting you.

I think you are missing the point.... A thread that I'm subscribed to may go 25 posts and no one responds to what I've said. I am notified of those 25 posts when I'm "subscribed" (and I have my setting so that I'm subscribed to every thread I post in). That's not the "notification" we are asking for. When someone "quotes" me and addresses something I've said... THAT'S the notification we would like to have...

ya, I missed that a lot when I first made this place my home.. :)
that was about a year ago I suppose, I don't really miss it anymore.

I really like the people here, and feel that I have been warmly welcomed.
and even the ones that I don't get along with are well mannered and respectful.. (all things being equal)

I think it is important to note, that this is a Liberty forest. :) it is not an "ark" with closed membership and barred topics.
I am hopeful that more will join us from the DP. after it closes for the umpteenth time.

Yeah, it took some time for me to get used to this setup as well. I like it now. Given the choice of seeing just direct replies or updates on subscribed threads. I prefer updates on threads.

The forum is set up so different from the DP that notifications about replies wouldn't work anyway. On the DP, whenever you reply its directly to another user's comment. Here, you just post in a thread. Often times you click the quote bracket, but not always. Threads go very differently here than DP. Over there conversations don't continue unless on a particular comment string. Here one comment can switch the focus of an entire thread.

Not really. At DP you can certainly start a new line of responses under any thread (just like here). It's not really the DP that I'm referring to but rather other forums that I've participated in. The problem with not being notified of a direct quote of something I've posted is that I might not see it and then not respond to the question or comment. I simply don't have the time to go back through every post in a thread I'm "subscribed" to ESPECIALLY if it's a very hot topic and has run 4 pages of comments since my last visit.

I guess this forum structure is only "friendly" to people who have lots of time each day to browse the posts. Unfortunately I don't have that much time so I miss lots of responses to what I've posted.

Really guys, it's been 20 some years since I've written code but I ABSOLUTELY KNOW that this can be done and it's not even that hard to do...

This can't be the only vBulletin forum people feel this way about. Seems to me someone who could write a patch that makes this possible would be able to make a buck or two.
