Stone, in his folksy introduction to the series that was shown on CBS's Showtime channel in the US in autumn 2012 and on Sky Atlantic in the UK in spring 2013, says he made it for his children. They were getting as one-sided a view of American history as he got – "We were the centre of the world, there was a manifest destiny, we were the good guys" – and he wanted to correct that. According to Stone, President Roosevelt's anti-imperialistic ideals were corrupted by his successors: from being the hammer of empire under Roosevelt and his vice-president Henry Wallace, the hero and great might-have-been in Stone's tale, the US became the most powerful and malign empire of all, virulently opposed to communism, fighting unjust wars, propping up dictators everywhere.

I haven't gotten through the whole series but I was pretty disappointed in the WW2 episodes. He focused more on military strategy as opposed to politics and didn't even mention the Japanese-American internment camps that only until recently have begun to receive more attention.

Sure seems weird that the history of the US started in WW2...

I like his idea, but I need more. Starting at the beginning is a good start..

Ya the first episode was not nearly as good as the latter.

There are many gems to be found in this series that have never before been portrayed in the mainstream. Someone of Oliver Stones stature spearheading a documentary that shines a light on our hypocritical and tyrannical foreign policy, and is then aired on Showtime, is unprecedented.

Here is a segment where he mentions the CIA involvement in the coup that overthrew Mossadegh and the installment of the Shah of Iran...

I agree. I'd love to see that as well.

I think he introduced this series as being events which occurred in his lifetime. I'd Imagine the entire propaganda machine was too much for him to cover. I'm guessing most viewers would better identify with the lies that were told to them in their own lifetimes.

You're right. This could be nit-picked/cherry-picked like any other controversial matter.

I've seen many homegrown grassroots documentaries on specific events that were more informative and detailed. However, if he had attempted to do that, number one I would have been ecstatic and number two I would have been surprised. I don't think the average American would have been able to digest something of that scope. All in all, this is progress and hopefully it will lead to more revealing truths that perhaps the average American will be able to embrace when another public figure is brave enough to call us out on our head in the sand denial.
