Indeed, the Internet is changing politics in a profound way, Domke said. It still won't be enough to get Paul elected -- he's polling in single digits in the key early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire. But his online support could end up changing things anyway.

"A successful candidacy for Paul or for many of the people supporting Paul is one that gets the attention of the establishment," Domke said. "You get enough attention from the people in your party that they pay attention to you going forward."
