I'm actually looking into going into that area so I can vote for him. He's about the closest to Ron of anyone involved in politics these days.

I just have a big grin on my face--he's fantastic. :D

The Brian Ellis facebook page is gone already. I wanted to ask him if his kids are upset that he spent $1M of their inheritance on this race.

Yep, even Ron was too nice to say it like that.:D That was probably Amash's most significant night in his professional life in terms of the margin of victory and the dynamics at play. Thanks to all that helped in any way.

I'm seeing concern on some sites over his being a "sore winner." The alleged comedian Jim Treacher at The Daily Caller, some reason commenters, and neo-Trot central's head Trot calls it "bitter."

I loved his honesty and his refusal to play nice with such vile people. I believe politics needs more of it, then it wouldn't be so weird and creepy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FHd5JDhu5A), and detached from reality.

In his victory speech, Amash called on Ellis to apologize:

"You owe my family and this community an apology for your disgusting, despicable smear campaign. You had the audacity to try and call me today after running a campaign that was called the nastiest in the country. I ran for office to stop people like you. To stop people who were more interested in themselves than in doing what's best for their district. Everyday Americans are taking back their government from the crooks and the cronies. They are taking back their government from the political class elites."

He also mocked former Republican House Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who backed Ellis:

"You are a disgrace. And I'm glad we could hand you one more loss before you fade into total obscurity and irrelevance."

Daniel Larison at The American Conservative on Amash's speech:

Readers can judge for themselves whether Amash is indulging in any self-pity in his speech, but I don’t see it. He was celebrating the fact that he and his campaign had overcome a nasty, concerted effort to defeat him by well-funded outside interests, and he was crediting the voters for being able to recognize and reject his opponent’s distortions of his record. He pointedly rebuked Ellis and one of Ellis’ backers by name, but there’s good reason to believe that they deserved those rebukes. Maybe that comes across as too triumphalist for some people, but sometimes that is the appropriate tone for a victory speech.

Considering the despicable and dishonest charges that his opponent and his other critics have flung at him during the campaign, I would say that Amash was remarkably restrained in what he said. For anyone to have accused him of being “Al Qaeda’s best friend in Congress” was disgusting enough, but for his opponent Ellis to have used that line in an attack ad marks him to be one of the most awful and unscrupulous candidates in recent memory. I don’t think it’s unreasonable or self-pitying to hold despicable tactics against the candidate that employs them, and it would have been ridiculous for Amash to let those tactics go unmentioned. No, “politics ain’t beanbag,” as Goldstein predictably says, but that doesn’t mean that people engaging in politics should have to accept the demagogic use of ugly and dishonest methods. Candidates that make use of such methods ought to be called out for their poor behavior, and that’s what Amash was doing.

Amash: GOP shouldn’t tolerate dirty campaigning

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — U.S. Rep. Justin Amash Wednesday stood by his strong words about his primary challenger, but also said Republicans need to come together going into the November general election.

Amash, the incumbent, won the Republican primary against challenger Brian Ellis Tuesday.

His victory speech started out as many do, with thanks to his family and supporters. But toward the end, Amash aimed harsh words toward his opponent.

“To Brian Ellis, you owe my family and this community an apology… for your disgusting, despicable, smear campaign,” Amash said. “You had the audacity to try to call me today after running a campaign that was called the nastiest in the country. I ran for office to stop people like you — to stop people who were more interested in themselves than in doing what’s best for their district.”

He reiterated his statements in an interview with 24 Hour News 8 just after the speech.

When he arrived at a Kent County GOP Unity Reception in Grand Rapids late Wednesday afternoon, Amash said he stood by those comments. He said Republicans shouldn’t tolerate dirty campaigning.

JUSTIN AMASH (AND I) RESPOND TO AARON

By Ross Kaminsky on 8.6.14 | 10:24PM

I always appreciate my public debates with my AmSpec collague Aaron Goldstein. They're relatively rare because we agree more than we disagree.

But Aaron took a couple of shots at Justin Amash (in response to my praise of him) which I'd like to respond to...one of which I've asked Rep. Amash to respond to.

First, I find Aaron's description of Justin's take-down of his smear-campaign-reliant opponent and his opponent's establishment supporters -- Aaron called it "self-pity" -- as rather strange. If anything, it would be more like gloating, since it's hard to exude self-pity after trouncing a well-funded opponent. I'm OK with a little gloating.

Second, it's entirely possible that Amash's words about former Rep. Pete Hoekstra say more about Amash than about Hoekstra, though I doubt it. But what they say about Amash is utterly welcome: When people support cronies and special interests over the Constitution, they deserve to be pilloried, and I'm damn glad we have at least one congressman willing to say what needs to be said.

Rep. Justin Amash Delivers One of the Most Scathing, Unforgiving Victory Speeches in Recent Memory: ‘I Ran for Office to Stop People Like You’

Jason Howerton
Aug. 6, 2014 10:05pm

After easily defeating his primary challenger on Tuesday, Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) delivered a scathing victory speech slamming his opponent for running a “smear campaign” against him.

“I ran for office to stop people like you,” Amash said, referring to his primary challenger, Brian Ellis.

“You owe my family and this community an apology for your disgusting, despicable smear campaign. You had the audacity to try and call me today after running a campaign that was called the nastiest in the country,” he continued.

Amash ended up defeated the Chamber of Commerce-backed Ellis by 14 points.

As the Washington Post points out, Ellis in one campaign ad cited a quote from Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) claiming the Arab-American Amash is “Al Qaeda’s best friend in Congress.”

Amash also addressed Ellis supporter and former Congressman-turned lobbyist Pete Hoekstra, calling him a “disgrace.”

“I’m glad we could hand you one more loss before you fade into total obscurity and irrelevance,” he said to cheers.

This got a lot of media attention today BTW, a lot more stories than were posted in this thread. I was a little worried when first read about the remarks on twitter but so far the coverage has not been as bad as I thought it would be, and a lot of people really liked it and found it refreshing, not just Ron Paul / Justin Amash supporters. I wonder how the "unity rally" went today.

Remarks ‘unfortunate,’ but Ellis will vote Amash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Less than 24 hours after U.S. Rep. Justin Amash (R-Grand Rapids) called his primary opponent’s campaign “disgusting” and “despicable,” Kent County GOP members gathered to preach unity heading into the November general election.

The unity event is an annual one, but had special meaning this year after the contentious campaign and comments.

...

After the fiery comments, some who attended the party told 24 Hour News 8 they wondered if Ellis would show up to the unity event.

Ellis did walk into the event a few minutes after Amash, and 24 Hour News 8 asked him what he thought about Amash’s speech.

“I was pretty tired last night,” Ellis said initially. “He said what he said. I want to see the party move forward. The campaign is in the past and I’m putting it behind me every step along the way here.”

24 Hour News 8 pressed him on if he was focusing on Amash’s accusations that Ellis smeared the incumbent.

“No, I think the comments are unfortunate, but that’s up to him, not me,” Ellis replied.

Ellis did say he “absolutely” planned to vote for Amash in the November general election.

hahahahhhaha ^^^

I'm glad this is so awkward, in a way. Yeah Amash needs to win over Ellis' supporters (at least some of them), but this was about as real as it gets. It's about time someone said something about how everyone hates each others' guts in the primaries and then get all kissy-kissy-face for the general election. That part of campaigning was always so very fake.

Justin is pretty much unbeatable in that district now. He crushed Ellis and the outside groups who spent $2m and 8 months attacking him. Justin's constituents like him a lot and must see the national attention he gets so he is very well known. Very similar to how Ron made his district his own.
