National Democrats vote to seat N.H. delegates

VIENNA, Va. AP) (AP) -- National Democratic leaders voted Saturday to support New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary status by granting the state a waiver to hold the contest on Jan. 8.

A sub-panel of the Democratic National Committee voted 28-2 to grant the waiver to move up the state's primary from the Jan. 22 date the DNC had selected.

The waiver means all of New Hampshire's delegates will be seated at the Democratic National Convention next summer, the state party said.

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley had asked for the waiver. He said circumstances outside New Hampshire's control forced Secretary of State William Gardner to schedule the primary on Jan. 8.

State law requires New Hampshire to hold its primary at least seven days ahead of any similar contest.

In other business, Democratic leaders voted to strip Michigan of all 156 of its delegates for moving its primary up to Jan. 15.
