This surprised me a little. It shouldn't but it did. The founders weren't that much older than myself during 1776. Thomas Jefferson was my age.

..., the Glorious Cause was to a large degree a young man's cause. The commander in chief of the army, George Washington, was himself only forty-three. John Hancock, the President of the Continental Congress, was thirty-nine, John Adams, forty, Thomas Jefferson, thirty-two,..In such times many were being cast in roles seemingly beyond their experience or capacities...

Taken from David McCullough's 1776, pg. 21

Reading the book, it shows that we had a rag-tag group of undisciplined people take on the most powerful empire at the time and won. Hat's off to all of you patriots on this fine Saturday evening. Keep fighting.

My God, I'm old!

Franklin was their senior citizen. He was old enough to be granted missionary work in France during the Revolution. Back in those days, the young were needed in the field of battle, and.... Oh never mind!

I listened to that book on audio tape over thanksgiving. I knew about their ages, but the book reminded me.

Well, I was actually thinking of Mr. Romney's mission to France during our war in Viet Nam. ;)

But I'm older now than everyone then except Washington! Yikes. I knew they were all young at the time, but somehow, it didn't feel good to be reminded just now.

Remember, being 40 years old back then is like being 70 today.

very very very important distinction. life was just different then, plain and simple...

how does that song by "the who" go, something about, "when a young man used to walk into to town...."
