UN says Iraq jihadists order female genital mutilation, experts doubtful

The UN lies, lies, and always lies. It's first lie is its mission statement.

The report is based on nothing but rumors, mostly that no-one has heard. It feeds into the ignorance about islam, where female genital mutilation is more of a tribal tradition amongst small clans that just happened to convert to Islam hundreds of years ago.

The cultural ignorance is on full display. Babies in incubators, viagra for rape, all women in Iraq are gonna get their vulvas cut off.

What a bunch of B.S.

I hate liars.

Cultural ignorance? what culture are we talking about? I guess the ISIS are too busy killing Christians, shias, sunnis and just everybody else who doesn't adhere to their fundamentalist way of life to focus on of female genital mutilation. Just look on lifeleak to watch their latest video their supporters posted where they stoned a woman for some reason. The authoritarian streak of these set of morons make the government we have right now look like anarcho capitalists.

I'm talking about cultural ignorance. Just because ISIS executes christians doesn't mean they enforce widespread female genital mutilation.
That's cultural ignorance. they may even stone women to death for adultery, but female genital mutilation is a small sub-set of muslims, not a common practice, not a part of sharia law, and certainly not an aim of ISIS.

Truth is all that matters. Unfounded demonization is counter-productive, and leads to more ignorance.

Get off your high horse, there is no cultural ignorance here. It's not as isolated as you would like to make it out to be. The report is wrong, it's not uncommon in African countries but doesn't happen as much in Iraq.

The headline you posted said "ISIS orders FGM" not conducts widespread FGM. Also ISIS has people from all over the place, they have Northern Africans in their rank where FGM is practiced. Also the thing with FGM is that it is not widespread in any country. Its a subset of a subset of African/Islamic/Arabic people who practice this. Could some ISIS leader from some Northern African country where it is practiced decided to start it as part of their known behavior to up the ante and take their extremism to the next level? I can believe that. Its not cultural anything to assume that ISIS could be up to FGM atrocities by now.

I agree that no matter how shitty and evil they are, there's no need lying about them. If anyone wants to do opposition research on them, just log into their twitter channel and make your outrage article on the last video topic

Most Jews in Israel routinely chop off the foreskin of newborn males, so I don't see how that is any different, but I guess that would make the UN anti-semetic, calling out a disgusting, barbaric, Jewish practice. It almost seems like WW2 was the best thing for them, now they can get away with putting Palestinians in their ghetto and bombing the hell out of them. Have you seen the living conditions there?

Having something terrible happen to a group of people doesn't give them the moral right to do the same to others. How long until Palestinians need to wear armbands?

I have a feeling instead of the rebel fighters hiding behind civilians, civilians are just simply in the way and Israel bombs regardless. Their leaders don't care about civilian deaths because to them the only good Palestinian is a dead one.

I don't think we really know the answer to that. Maybe if they ended the ban on it, the procedure was allowed to modernize and people were able to come into a surgical hospital to it, there could be fewer complications from FGM. Btw, have you heard the screams from a baby boy being circumcised? Its one of the painful sounds I have ever heard in my life.

Quite frankly, I think society can get used to FGM the same way they got used to MGM. Its all a matter of marketing, maybe porn can start using only girls with a "pretty" vaginas and before you know it, it will be in vogue.

Men who are circumcised can and do still enjoy sex.

Lots of women who get circumcised still enjoy sex. They just enjoy it a little less now that they have few nerve endings in the sex parts.

Found this video about male circumcision very interesting. Talks about the history and reason why we still do it even when it virtually has no medical benefits

I fucking hate trolls. Seriously, the major reason why I am super against FGM is because it is done to teenagers who should have more autonomy for themselves and who will most likely remember the pain more than infants.

But apart from the reasons stated above, I consider both to be equally despicable. Had my parents told me as a 16yr old that they were going to circumcise me? I would have told them to go fuck themselves and run away from home. There were only able to get away with it before I could not fight them off.

I understand many people feel that way, and that is their right. And I also would have had the same reaction as a 16 year old. However, that being said, circumcision is not performed for the express purpose of denying the child the ability to enjoy sex and denying them pleasure.

Yea, its not something most people think about about. i think the first time I seriously thought about it was after I watched a documentary of this guy that was horrible damaged during his circumcision. They used some type of laser to circumcise him and he got burns that require his penis to be fully removed. Anyway, the family and the doctor decided to surgically turn him into a woman without telling him. They did surgeries, hormone therapy and dressed him up like a girl and stuff but it did not work. I think he/she finally rebelled, turned into drugs and I think she committed suicide. It was just very tragic .

I am not saying that is anywhere close to the experience most circumcised men have but the chances of serious damage happening is high enough to question the operation. The sad part with all this is that even with what I now know and what I have said in this thread about how I would tell off my parents had they informed me about it, there's a 50/50 chance I still do it to my son when I have one.

Also, it just looks nicer with the fore skin off and not one woman I have been with said they would have preferred an uncircumcised penis. So the practice that started to imitate the snake peeling off his skin to renew itself goes on and on and on from generation to generation.

Some whackos like John Harvey Kellogg advocated circumcision to curb masturbation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harvey_Kellogg#Masturbation_Prevention

Kellogg worked on the rehabilitation of masturbators, often employing extreme measures, even mutilation, on both sexes. He was an advocate of circumcising young boys to curb masturbation and applying phenol to a young woman's clitoris. In his Plain Facts for Old and Young,[7]

In Jewish religion Circumcision is done as a religious ritual. If there were any other religions advocating cutting skin off a child's penis in order for them to be closer to God, they'd be labeled as a crazy satanic cult. All of us here are appalled if someone molests a child, isn't MUTILATING their genitals even worse of a crime? Some religious sects even suck the child's penis to stop the bleeding with their mouth after the deed is done. Barbaric. The best answer American parents can come up with today for circumcision is "So they don't get teased in the locker room" or "His father had it done"

If I took a guess, you're just trying to justify your own circumcision, because the reality of the situation would be too much to accept

Not what I said.

There's a difference between being sincerely opposed to something (like male circumcision) for reasons that have nothing to do with politics.... And being opposed to something simply because it is associated with Judaism or Israel.

I'm sure most of you here are in the former category. At least I hope so. :)

I'm against any religion that says for your child to be closer to God they need to have a portion of their penis sacrificed. I don't see how not approving of that part of Judaism is any different than not approving of any other religion.

That was only for the Israelites, and only back then. (Although of course many people still do it)

When Jesus came along, that was the start of the New Covenant.

Christianity teaches that it is our hearts that must be 'circumcised (http://www.gotquestions.org/circumcision-of-the-heart.html).'

So, as with many things in the Old Testament, I think circumcision was sort of a physical representation of a spiritual truth.

That said, when people dramatically exaggerate that practice it into something horrible, like the female mutilation that goes on in some countries, it is dishonest or just silly.
