(Greenville, TN) — During an Industrial Development Meeting at Greeneville Light and Power, US Veteran, Eddie Overholt was arrested.

Mayor Alan Broyles and board members were discussing a particularly unpopular decision. Up for debate was the option to submit a second application to TDOT that would allow a private company, US Nitrogen, to install and run wastewater pipes to the Nolichucky River.

The decision would allow US Nitrogen access to free water as well as a free place to dump their wastewater, instead of reaching an agreement with the local water utility.

Being that the details of this decision were less than enthusiastically received by the townspeople, the Mayor and board members were not using microphones while they discussed them. Four of the board members were also sitting with their backs facing the public viewing area.

Like any concerned citizen would do, Mr. Overholt asked them to please speak up so he could hear the details. When he did so, Mayor Broyles sicked (sic) his uniformed goons on Overholt and he was placed under arrest and escorted out.

After he was escorted out, Overholt was forced to walk to the jail, despite having health problems. When he tried to sit down to rest, he was charged with resisting arrest.

Naturally, the citizens of Greeneville are up in arms about their corrupt government and this veteran’s arrest. They are calling for justice for Overholt.

Reminds me of the one story from Ark. a few years back, where the town's fire chief was before the town council complaining about how corrupt the local police dept. was -- then one of the town's cops put a stop to that by shooting him in the back.

Edit: Memory was wrong, all these stories blending together, he was shot in the back during a court hearing, not a town council meeting. I guess the cop was never charged, but they were considering charging the fire chief. It is kind of on-topic, showing what can happen just for speaking up, while trying to work within THEIR system ...

Fire Chief Shot in Court Over Tickets
Steve Verdon · Friday, September 4, 2009 · 19 Comments

JERICHO, Ark. — It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Fire Chief Don Payne didn’t hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps.

The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court.

Now the police chief has disbanded his force “until things calm down,” a judge has voided all outstanding police-issued citations and sheriff’s deputies are asking where all the money from the tickets went. With 174 residents, the city can keep seven police officers on its rolls but missed payments on police and fire department vehicles and saw its last business close its doors a few weeks ago.

“You can’t even buy a loaf of bread, but we’ve got seven police officers,” said former resident Larry Harris, who left town because he said the police harassment became unbearable.

It was anger over traffic tickets that brought Payne to city hall last week, said his lawyer, Randy Fishman. After Payne failed to get a traffic ticket dismissed on Aug. 27, police gave Payne or his son another ticket that day. Payne, 39, returned to court to vent his anger to Judge Tonya Alexander, Fishman said.

It’s unclear exactly what happened next, but Martin said an argument between Payne and the seven police officers who attended the hearing apparently escalated to a scuffle, ending when an officer shot Payne from behind.

I’m sure it was totally justified and in line with departmental policies. After all, who knows Payne might have had a pencil or paper clip on him. Those are danerous weapons you know.

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley said Thursday that he didn’t plan to file any felony charges against the officer or Payne. Fairley, reached at his home, said Payne could face a misdemeanor charge stemming from the scuffle, but that would be up to the city’s judge. He said he didn’t remember the name of the officer who fired the shot.

I love these FARCE of a public hearings. And when someone from the public, ACTUALLY tries to participate, which is the WHOLE POINT of the so called meeting....They get shut down and arrested.

No they're not.

What they are doing is spouting off.

They are taking the lazy mans approach in that they are asking the police to police the police and when that does no good they'll shake their heads and mutter under their breath about the system being broken..

Justice will not be achieved in their courts.

I'm glad the mayor and the city officials controlled the situation from getting out of hand!
The guy CLEARLY brought this upon himself, disrespecting officials, AFTER instructions had been given for not getting out of order.

I mean, it's like in school. The class gets rowdy and the teacher says, "The NEXT student to make a PEEP, gets IT!"
That's all this was, CLEARLY. The guy brought this upon himself. Wasted his time, and the fine officers' time, by showing up to some stupid "public hearing" or whatever this was.

*Takes a sip of the nice, iced, KOOL-AID!
