The department received more military surplus guns than any other local department in the state last year.

"We actually reconfigured the whole armory to accommodate all of this," said Sheriff Joe Guy.

Sheriff Guy oversees 31 officers and investigators, but his department received 161 army rifles and pistols, including 71 M16 rifles and 71 .45-caliber pistols.

NewsChannel 5 Investigates asked, "Why does your department need all these guns?"

Sheriff Guy responded, "Well, we don't need this many. There was a little error in the order."

The Sheriff said the Army surplus program doubled his initial order, but he hasn't sent the guns back.

I grew up in Mcminn County and I've met Sheriff Guy. Along with Sheriff he's also the county's most renowned historian. Honestly, he's the best Sheriff Mcminn County has had in decades.

I may be wrong about him, but I don't think he has the "Us vs Them" mentality typical of most law enforcement. That said, I don't know how to explain this other than, "It's free shit, let's get as much as we can." I'm sure he's going to get a lot of shit about this locally. People around Athens are already pretty pissed off about the local Police Department being overzealous. They're not going to be happy about their beloved Sheriff following suit.
