Fighters from the newly established Islamic State ambushed and destroyed an Iraqi armored column in the western province of Anbar. Islamic State fighters also captured several American-made armored personnel carriers. The ambush highlights the deteriorating state of the Iraqi security forces.

The Islamic State's Anbar Wilayat (division or province) released a series of photographs on its Twitter account on July 10 that document the ambush of an Iraqi armored column and the aftermath of the attack [photographs below].

According to the statements from the Anbar Wilayat, the Iraqi Army convoy was attacked in the Khalidiyah area in Anbar province. Although the exact date of the ambush was not provided, the Anbar Wilayat typically publishes photographs of attacks within days of carrying them out.

Several photos show Islamic State fighters opening fire on the convoy as it drives on a dirt road in a rural area of Khalidiyah. The Islamic State fighters appear to detonate one or more IEDs, or roadside bombs, on the armored column that includes US made and donated M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks and M113 armored personnel carriers. At least three M1A1s and nine M113s can be identified in the photographs.

At least one tank and two M113s are shown while on fire. One of the Abrams tanks appears to be half buried in a ditch.

The Iraqi soldiers appear to have abandoned the convoy after it was ambushed. The Islamic State only displayed one body of an Iraqi soldier, who appears to have been burned.

How nice of the iraqi to abandon the remaining vehicles so isis can be stronger. I would imagine the iraqi be trained to destroy hardware so enemy wont be able to use it.

Things are going according to plan and we know what the plan is - enhance the profits of the well-connected at the expense of the lives, fortunes, and liberty of everyone else. The CIA had more to work with it and remember that many of these ISIS fighters are battle hardened from the Syrian conflict. These Iraqis are worthless in the field of battle. How are they getting beaten so badly with M1A1s and M113 APCs?

Might be the Commanders in the field. And it might be Morale.

I think it is exactly according to plan. but that is my opinion and I have no concrete proof to back that.

These Iraqis are worthless in the field of battle. How are they getting beaten so badly with M1A1s and M113 APCs?

The Islamic battle doctrine is centered around resolution. A jihadi with an AK-47 and the will to use it is worth more on a battlefield than a tank squad that doesn't have the guts to fight.

Anyone who has been listening has known this for over a decade... the reason we have not won the "War on Terror" - and can't - is that we simply don't have the will to fight ruthlessly enough to win.

Tactics for jihadis to weaponize human populations and count on the West's modern distaste for genocide to prevent effective counter-action. Since the West can't commit the kind of heavy presence necessary to keep order everywhere at once, they stay fluid and move the battlefield to where those weapons aren't.

But the jihadi cause can keep advancing in an area even when there's no combat. These people are offering poor, oppressed peoples the chance to be part of a historic fulfillment of their shared religion's beliefs. They can point to the miracle of the Islamic battle doctrine evening the odds even against mighty America - and the world can see that Pax Americana, and perhaps the US itself - the world's #1 power for a human lifetime - is falling. They can make a pretty good case right now.
