Perry Slams Rand Paul’s ‘Isolationism’: U.S. Must Back Allies Against Islamic Rebels

by Evan McMurry | 12:48 pm, July 13th, 2014

In what’s becoming a ritual for GOP figures who enter the national conversation, Texas Governor Rick Perry took the pages of the Washington Post on Saturday to critique Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) “isolationist” foreign policy. After Paul fired back, telling Perry to worry about his own border before the policy positions of Paul, Perry responded on Sunday’s Face the Nation.

“We have allies [in the Middle East], in the form of Israel and Jordan, that expect us to stand with them to help them,” Perry said.

“I disagree with Senator Paul’s representation of what America should be doing,” he continued. “He talked about basically what I consider to be isolationist policies. America can no longer come back on to the continental United States and draw a red line around the shore of America and think that we’re somehow another not going to be impacted. We must engage and tactically, thoughtfully, using the assets that we have against ISIS to keep these individuals from being able to create an Islamic state in that part of the world that will put Jordan and put Israel’s literal future in jeopardy.”

Paul also asked how many troops Perry was willing to send to Iraq, a country that was flailing to defend itself.

“The idea that I’m for opening up the gates and sending multiple numbers of American troops back in to harm’s way is a bit of a stretch,” Perry replied.

Wow, Perry. He says we need a strategy in the middle east, if that does not involve sending combat troops then what is it? What specifically is it about Rand's statement does he disagree with? What does he think about arming the rebels in Syria? He didn't say anything other than mischaracterize Rand's position. If we cannot allow Islamic states in the middle east then why are we not already at war with Iran? Trying to prevent Islamic states in the middle east is like trying to stop baptist churches from popping up in Arkansas.

I'm not convinced he understands what he is saying. Can't wait to see him on the debate stage.

Perry must have just watched Superman and thinks the public won't recognize him from the previous Primary with those glasses.

Neo-lib socialist interventionist Bob Schieffer: "OK, Rick, I'm going to throw you a softball. I want you to attack Rand Paul. I'll give you all the time you want. I won't interrupt (as long as you don't say something nice about him). Here we go, right down the middle. Remember, he had the gall to respond to your last attack. Have at him!"

I love how they all talk about 'retreating all the way back to our own borders' like they don't know that the U.S. has territories stretching from the Caribbean to the China Sea.

So, we'll 'only' have forces stretching halfway around the world. Assuming we never, ever take the Suez when travelling between those seas. How horrible.

Wow Perry was really nervous and scripted. He wasn't even in the Meet The Press studio. Looked like he was reading from a teleprompter or something. I wonder how many hours his staff had him rehearsing just for that?

Perry's been all over TV today talking about immigration.

...he did really, really poorly.

The hosts were trying to throw him softball questions, and he was still contradicting himself, rambling incoherently, making up words, etc.

You almost feel sorry the guy (almost).

With Perry criticizing him, Rand looks like Einstein by comparison.

From what political experts did Rick Perry get his political reading list (one for all Americans)?

I am starting to think that the Wall Street/CFR crowd may be handing the neocons their permanent pink slip. I have myself wondering today if they turned Perry loose on purpose to discredit the neocon narrative by putting his "oops" face on it. Whose Wheaties did the oil lobby piss into? My conspiracy thought for today.

He didn't say at all what he would actually do in Iraq. He didn't give any specifics. If he's opposed to sending ground troops back into Iraq, then what does he want to do?

Exactly, he didn't even say how he disagrees with what Rand said. Beavis and Butthead laughing would have been better than his response.

I criticize illiterate Governors, who steal prison stock eyeglasses believing they will add 10 points to their 60 I.Q. Man, that man must be cheap as hell to wear prison stock eyeglasses ... I know the chit, I was a correctional officer.. Is he spending all his money on blow, that he can't pay for frames at VisionWorks?

Buy something for them by borrowing $ from China?

I wonder if Perry has a Victory Garden or has taken his metal down to the scrap metal drive... I wonder if he'll have a "Meatless Monday" this week...

I think dropping his 2012 campaign immediately after getting whipped in IA and NH is an indicator that he may rebrand himself and try again.

I don't know. I used to think Cruz was, but not anymore. Unlike Palin, both Cruz and Perry aren't one bit likable.

Cruz always seems to have that smarmy douche smirk on his face. You know the one:

These attacks are great for separating the conservatives from the dipshits. The voters have already gone down that road and for the most part they now reject it. The people are with Rand much more than the Perrys and Cheneys. All that these neocons do with rants like this, is repel voters that are tired of the pro-war lies.
