A Texas town south of Houston has launched a pre-emptive strike prohibiting the federal government from using facilities in their community as shelters to house the overflow of illegal immigrants flooding the southern U.S. border.

“The League City council voted 6-2 to adopt the resolution Tuesday night. It refuses any request from the federal government to set up detention or processing centers there, citing unspecified ‘health concerns,’” reports the Associated Press.

Last night’s meeting contained an agenda item imploring city council members to “Consider and take action on a resolution of the City of League City, Texas to protect the health, safety, and security of our citizens and community; and providing other matters related to the subject.”

“WHEREAS, the federal government has failed to protect the homeland in accordance with Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution,” the resolution states (see below), “Texas has the right and obligation to protect its citizens in accordance with Article 1, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution..”

Wary of reports that infectious illness is accompanying the immigrant surge, city council members moved to “control the potential threat of communicable diseases reported to be prevalent among illegal aliens..”

“..[A]ll agencies of the City of League City are instructed to refuse requests or directives by federal agencies to permit or establish any facility for the purposes of processing, housing, or detaining any illegal aliens, designated as ‘refugee’ or otherwise,” the resolution, sponsored by City Councilwoman Heidi Thiess, outlines.

Residents attending the packed council meeting applauded the resolution’s passage, with many also giving a standing ovation:

The city’s decision follows a visit by federal officials touring an abandoned middle school in Houston, which is the first step in electing a location as a possible shelter.

Recently, a leaked email from the Federal Emergency Management Agency illustrated how the federal government is in quite the bind seeking housing for some 52,000 detained illegal immigrant minors.
“This is an unprecedented event that requires unique approaches to temporarily house children..,” FEMA said in an email published by The Daily Caller on Monday.

An interactive map depicts feds have sought housing for the influx in states as far inland as Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and even Washington state. In Murrieta, Calif., residents have stopped federal buses from transplanting more illegals into their community.

One immigrant who recently gained U.S. citizenship expressed to Infowars sentiments likely mirrored by other naturalized citizens. She said she spent 15 years and “a lot of money” jumping through the various hoops in order to become a legal citizen, and that she’s disappointed the current presidential administration is encouraging an illegal act:

The “unspecified health concerns” noted by the AP and cited by League City council members regard reports of scabies, tuberculosis, H1N1 swine flu and other communicable diseases being found in populations housed in detentions facilities, such as the Lackland Air Force Base, where some Border Patrol agents have also contracted illness.

Other potential threats to the community taken into consideration in the city’s resolution include threats posed by gang members admittedly being released by border agents, terror threats posed by “radical Islamic terror groups,” and the impact on the local economy.

Yesterday we reported the Mayor of Laredo, Texas, announced he would not be digging into public funds to assist illegal immigrants in fairness to residents. “We’re strapped. We cannot put the local taxpayers in strain,” Mayor Raul Salinas said. “We’re not going to raise taxes. If we use some tax money, and we’re tight for money now, are we going to get reimbursed? That’s the challenge that we face.” The answer is no, according to the official breakdown of Obama’s requested $3.8 billion dollar border aid package.

League City says it “calls on other communities and jurisdictions to join with us in this action by passing similar Resolutions.”
