New cybersecurity legislation cleared the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday during a closed session. Critics fear it may broaden the NSA’s already formidable access to Americans’ data.

Written by Senate Intelligence Chair Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), CISA – or Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act – is widely seen as a redux of last year’s CISPA bill, which was widely protested by online privacy watchdogs and ultimately defeated in Congress.

A draft of the bill circulated in June granted permission by government agencies to retain and share data for “a cybersecurity purpose,” which was defined as “the purpose of protecting an information system or information that is stored on, processed by or transiting an information system from a cybersecurity threat or security vulnerability.” According to the Guardian, that language would likely lead the NSA to stockpile weaknesses in digital security.

Guess CISPA just isnt enough power for the NSA. Nor will every law that passes after it that continues to infringe on our rights to self determination. They wont be happy until they know every thought inside everyones head and can process all that data in real time.

The Thought Police are most definitely already here, and their powers only continue to grow.

(Edit - Note: Its CISA, not a Typo. CISA - Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, not CISPA - Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act)

Two years after CISPA, the controversial bill allowing govt access to corporate customer data, was defeated its new incarnation hit the senate. Critics say CISA lost not only one letter in the name but also the privacy safeguards of its predecessor.

The draft legislation coauthored by Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein and Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Saxby Chambliss as approved by closed session committee.

The bill allows companies to voluntary share information on cyber-threats with government and exempts them from liability for harm done to their customers in doing so.

Opponents of the bill say in many regards it’s worse than its predecessor and are mounting a public resistance campaign, hoping it will send the draft into CISPA-like oblivion.
