Might be a good time to visit Beale Street...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis police say more than 400 officers have called in sick in the past week in what appears to be a deliberate action to protest planned health care cuts.

Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said Monday that 404 officers have called in sick since June 30, an increase from 308 officers who had called in sick through Sunday. The department has about 2,280 officers.

According to The Commercial Appeal, Memphis Police Director said Sunday that the actions come in an apparent protest to a City Council vote that will reduce health care subsidies for city employees so that the funds can be redirected to the city's troubled pension fund.

Because of the number of officers out, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is helping patrol the city.

Cops are the bottom tier of the tax-ticks...

If they're not held accountable by the taxpayers you can bet your ass the upper tiers are immune...

Silent Cal would no doubt say...

There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time.

But I don't think that's what they're doing. In fact, if someone were to compare the number of violent deaths in Memphis the day they called in sick with the average, it might be illuminating. A little too illuminating for the cops' comfort, in fact.

If it can only be shown that cops going on strike is a boon to public safety, the jig might finally be up for the forces of conformity and obsequiousness.

They do it because they live to serve the public.

Glad to see them finally cleaning up the streets over there. 400 less street-thugs should help out.

We've gotten literally inundated for half a decade with stories about how officer safety always trumps public safety no matter what in all circumstances, period.
They couldn't have been more clear up to now that public safety is at the bottom of their priority list, if it's even on the list.
Yet this jig is very much still playing.
