In regards to putting our precious, state anointed, "heroes" in danger, during the possible bad weather coming this weekend.

"This is no time to put your stupid hat on," North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory told CNN's "New Day" on Thursday.

"Don't get brave just because you see some good waves out there," he said. "Stay out of the water ... and make sure we don't have to come rescue you and put our emergency workers in jeopardy."

Why not just say--"hey idiots, we can't afford it if you do something dumb...if you go into the water, you're on your own?"

Obviously he isn't aware that surfing is the only true religion.

Hey Dannno--can you describe in words what it's like to surf? I've never done it, probably never will, but I'm curious.

I was thinking she was expecting something much more personal and intimate than just some youtube. I mean, if you are devoted to a religion you should be able to express your own feelings about it...

But ya I'd say the big difference between surfing and other board sports is that the wave provides the energy for your forward momentum, and all of that water coming up the face of the wave gets translated into forward velocity - the deeper in the wave you are the more energy - the whole point is to get as deep in the barrel as possible and come shooting out the end.

The rest is tricks and acrobatics, which can be fun too.... but the whole point is to get yourself in position to get barreled, or to find the line that gives you the maximum amount of speed possible, staying as close to the curl or the part of the wave that is breaking as possible.

Just sitting out on your board, bobbing around with the swells, enjoying and connecting with nature is another big highlight of surfing.

Just hope your line-up looks more like this:

The closest I've come to that is bare-riding waves on lake Erie (shallow lake, so in a storm it's fun/dangerous), some sailing (usually Hobie Cats.) But yeah, I'm looking for the "why" of surfing in the religious sense, not technical. I've been thinking about looking towards sunnier places with water.

And no--can't watch videos without major hassle at this point.

Well besides connecting with nature, something about getting barreled on a hollow wave is pretty amazing. Some even compare it to sex and will refer to both sex and getting barreled as "tube riding"

You can surf lake Erie, but usually only VERY cold storms:

Fortunately wetsuit technology has gotten so good that you can surf pretty comfortably next to a glacier if you have the right equipment (they even have battery powered wetsuits that heat up).

If you're looking at the east coast, Rhode Island has some good surf, as does NH. If you go too far north I think you get shadowed by Nova Scotia. Going south, New Jersey, Long Island, VA, NC, SC and Florida all have surf though some parts of SC i've heard can get a bit on the sharky side.

A lot of good east coast surf happens during very cold winter storms, but there's also good surf during hurricane seasons in the fall and spring, a lot depends on the direction the particular coastline is facing.

I would contact Nikki for more info on that, I've never actually surfed the east coast before.

If you're looking west coast, the surf is a lot bigger more consistently, especially north of southern california.. in fact a lot of places you end up waiting for the swell (and often winds) to come down rather than waiting for it to go up.

To me surfing connects my body to my mind, and along the way you cooperate with a natural source of energy unlike anything else.

when I do not surf for some time, I lose a bit of focus and stress tends to build up. When I surf I frequently connect to God and I feel his presence in me. The water is calming and the waves wash me.

I'd highly recommend NC for good beaches, and surf here is among the best on the east coast. Also jobs are good here for the most part. NC is also cool because we have mountains in the west, Triad business in the center of the state, great schools and colleges, and the beach, big rivers, world class fishing, great boating environments - sailing is very popular. Kite surfing is also very popular on the outer banks.

Screw it, just make interacting with water in an unapproved way Illegal!

Includes Squirt GUNS and water hose play, bathing in contaminated water and drinking mandatory fluoridated water is still allowed, for now...

Most surfers don't need the governor to tell them when its safe to go out, and surfers rarely require rescue by professionals.

This storm didnt bring any good surf with it, most surfers chose to stay out of it.

What bothers me are the early planned curfews in local areas. Storm is brushing the coast and they already called the curfew of multiple areas. Freedom.

This is now SOP.

I've seen this on the Gulf Coast many times now, full lockdowns of whole swaths of a state, merely in anticipation of storm.

Now they are doing up north as well, in Massachusetts last year, they locked down half the state for a snowstorm.

I won't debate religion on this forum but I will say that it is better than other California based religions that spring to mind like Heaven's Gate or The Peoples Temple.

I also like a lot of their liturgical music.

I expect similar shit to happen here when monsoon seasons and winter storms start getting nasty again...
