A coalition of grassroots groups from across the political spectrum joined forces to fly an airship over the NSA's data center in Bluffdale, Utah on Friday, June 27, 2014, to protest the government's illegal mass surveillance program. (Photo by Greenpeace)

Anti-surveillance activists flew a blimp above the National Security Agency’s massive, $1.5 billion data center in Bluffdale, Utah on Friday as an act of protest against the NSA’s contentious collection of vast amounts of the world’s digital data.

The airship belongs to the environmentalist organization Greenpeace and was flown early Friday over the NSA’s newly completed data center as a demonstration waged collectively by that group and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a California-based advocacy group that defends digital rights and has fought tooth-and-nail against the United State intelligence community’s surveillance programs since before former contractor Edward Snowden began to leak classified secrets about those operations last year. The Tenth Amendment Center, “a national think tank that works to preserve and protect the principles of strictly limited government through information, education and activism,” also participated in the unannounced flight.

On Twitter, the EFF said the event was being conducted to announce the organization’s “new campaign grading Congress on surveillance reform,” now online at StandAgainstSpying.org.

“The goal of the congressional scorecard is to raise public awareness about the surveillance debates taking place right now and to create public pressure on individual members of Congress and the president to take significant steps to reform NSA spying in light of the information the public has learned over the past year,” the website (https://standagainstspying.org/) reads in part. “We aim to stop any bills that would codify mass surveillance while at the same time bolstering support for meaningful surveillance reform.”

"At least for now, thumbing your nose at the government is not illegal,” Higgins added. “We did not break the law."

Plenty of nightmare surveillance theories surround the million-square-foot NSA facility opened last year in Bluffdale, Utah. Any locals driving by the massive complex Friday morning saw something that may inspire new ones: A massive blimp hovering over the center, with the letters NSA printed on its side.

Activist groups including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Greenpeace launched the 135-foot thermal airship early Friday morning to protest the agency's mass surveillance programs and to announce the launch of Stand Against Spying, a website that rates members of Congress on their support or opposition to NSA reform. The full message on the blimp reads 'NSA: Illegal Spying Below' along with an arrow pointing downward and the Stand Against Spying URL."

To paraphrase Ron Paul, there is nothing wrong with working with people across the aisle if it is for the right reasons. Sorry, I couldn't find an actual quote.

Ha! I love it!

Big kudos to the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Greenpeace. I can guarantee a lot - I mean, a LOT of people saw that blimp. I've always been a bit irked at how news descriptions of the Bluffdale NSA center describe it as being "out in the Utah desert." It gives the implication the center was built way out in the middle of nowhere, like Area 51.

The truth is quite the opposite. The center is just south of Salt Lake City, in between the towns of American Fork and Sandy. It's only a couple of miles off of I-15, and the entire area is DENSELY populated.

This was a pretty cool stunt. I just wish the blimp had "Illegal Spying Below" written a bit bigger.

Blimp Over Bluffdale

Becky Akers

http://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/blimp-over-bluffdale/

In what may be the cleverest protest yet against the NSA’s criminality, the patriots at the Tenth Amendment Center joined the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Greenpeace in flying a blimp over the agency’s “Collect-it-all” monolith in Bluffdale, UT. The blimp’s sign read, “NSA, illegal spying below.”

Imagine “working” for the NSA and spying, so to speak, that rebuke overhead as you stride to your eavesdropping post of a morning. Talk about demoralization!

Shaming, isolating, and shunning government’s leeches worked for the American colonists; they dealt so severely with friends and family assisting the British Empire’s tyranny that few Americans dared do so. The Crown had to import from England those “swarms of officers” that the Declaration denounced. The same tactics still work. Are you friends with a bureaucrat or cop? Why? Are your children or siblings contemplating positions with Leviathan? Let them know you take such attacks on freedom personally and that as enemies of all mankind, they can no longer expect a welcome in your home. Don’t be shy about telling the rest of the family your reasons for excluding the miscreant, either.

Becky, I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment and advice. Everyone should take it personally. The entire federal government is a police state, and the police state is a threat. When someone becomes an agent of the State, and the federal Leviathan monster in particular, one is joining up with an invading and occupying quasi-foreign Regime, making up new rules and diktats as it goes along.

Shaming and shunning is the appropriate treatment for traitors, which frankly is what they are, given the modern transformation of the Regime into the criminal racket that it is. Leviathan is a thoroughly treasonous organization in the precise Constitutional sense of the word: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them …” referring, in my view, to those agents of the federal bureaucracy acting criminally against the people of the states, with the feds arming up as they have, and expanding their military powers within the borders and coasts, and “Homeland Security” (sic) forces as well, and their infiltrating local police departments with military equipment, as well as the spying, fusion centers, the TSA gropesters and all the rest.

They really are “levying war” against the people, in their war on our security, their war on our medical freedom, their war on our private lives and our food choices, etc., etc., etc. Each and every one of these foreign invaders and occupiers of the Regime and their enforcers and minions needs to be ostracized.

I checked YouTube earlier, but didn't find any. Is there a video of this event? Wonder if they filmed it, and are preparing the footage in some promotional trailer perhaps?
