DAYTON —
Police this evening shot and wounded a pit bull puppy it says was charging them.
Police were called at 6 p.m. to the area of McReynolds and Boltin streets on a report of two stray dogs. The stray dogs were caught without incident, but police said two other dogs ran out of a fenced area and charged at the officers while they were investigating.
Police shot one of the dogs, a puppy whose owner, Curtis Gifford, disputes that his dogs charged police. He said his dog that was shot was inside a fenced-in yard at the time of the incident.
Gifford, who runs a licensed kennel, said the animal shot is a show dog.
"I show my dogs. This is a show dog. This is a dog that will never be able to be shown again. I paid $5,000 for this dog," he said.
The dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, and its injuries are considered serious, he said.
