During a four-hour flight from Washington to Salt Lake City on Thursday evening, Labrador was on his iPad messaging with fellow members to gauge the depth of his support. Labrador also huddled in the first class galley for a lengthy chat with Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) joined them for part of the conversation.

Labrador said many of his colleagues were urging him to run on Thursday and that he is doing his due diligence to weigh the pros and cons of a bid challenging McCarthy.

If McCarthy was kept under 50%, it could get interesting.

If, like the article stated, the outcome was to keep McCarthy under 50% and then have the Labrador and Sessions voters to compromise on someone, like the Amash-backed Hensarling, then it'd be a huge win.

I bet they won't even take a vote until they know someone has at least 75% support. It looks bad enough that leadership can't even win a primary, splitting on 2 or 3 candidates would add insult to injury, in the political sense. This could be good though. They will want to put someone up who has broad support.

The Majority Leader the House Needs
by Tim Shoemaker on JUNE 13, 2014 in NATIONAL BLOG

With Kevin McCarthy (Cantor’s handpicked replacement) remaining the only announced candidate for Majority Leader, it’s all the more vital for the grassroots to weigh in with their Republican representatives to urge them to support Raul Labrador (R-ID-1) for House Majority Leader.

As Megan wrote this morning, McCarthy’s ascension to Leader would show that House Republicans have learned nothing from Eric Cantor’s stunning defeat this week, and may suggest to voters that many of them might end up deserving to be “Cantor’d” themselves.

If House Republicans want to show they’re listening to voters, they need to elect a Majority Leader who represents and will work with grassroots conservatives and libertarians.

That leader should be Raul Labrador.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY-4), a strong leader in the liberty movement said of Labrador,

“Raul is one of the most intelligent and principled conservative members of congress. He would make a great leader. ”

Campaign for Liberty is strongly throwing our support behind Labrador for Majority Leader and encourage our members to
contact their Republican representatives and urge them to support Raul Labrador (R-ID-1) for House Majority Leader.

He's announced. Steve King says he's pro-amnesty (whatever that means - to him)

Raúl Labrador Announces Run For Majority Leader
Alex Pappas
2:17 PM 06/13/2014

Idaho Rep. Raúl Labrador announced on Friday that he will run for House majority leader, taking on the pick of establishment Republicans.

But while he is positioning himself as a conservative alternative to front-runner California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Labrador might have issues with conservatives who disagree with him on immigration reform.

“I am running for majority leader because I want to help create a vision of growth and opportunity for everyone and start getting to work for the American people,” Labrador said in a statement released by his office.

He added, “I want a House leadership team that reflects the best of our conference. A leadership team that can bring the Republican conference together. A leadership team that can help unite and grow our party. Americans don’t believe their leaders in Washington are listening and now is the time to change that.”

Some conservatives, like Iowa Rep. Steve King, have been calling for a conservative alternative to McCarthy, who like Labrador, is supportive of some immigration reform measures.

On Friday, King took to Twitter to make note of Labrador’s stance on the issue.

“#Labrador is pro amnesty,” he wrote. “If not this year, he has strongly advocated for amnesty next year.”

Labrador, born to a single mother in Puerto Rico, was elected to Congress in 2010. He was among the Republicans who voted against John Boehner for speaker last year.

Here are some of his worst votes:

H R 933: Department of Defense, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr933)

Vote Date: March 21, 2013
Vote: AYE (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2013/roll089.xml)
http://www.thenewamerican.com/freedomindex/images/0.jpg
Bad Vote.

Continuing Appropriations for Fiscal 2013. This appropriations bill (H.R. 933) would finance the federal government through the end of fiscal 2013. Its provisions include five full-year appropriations bills - Agriculture, Commerce-Justice-Science, Defense, Homeland Security, and Military Construction-VA. It would also continue appropriations for the remainder of the federal government at 2012 levels, with certain adjustments. The spending includes $1.043 trillion in "discretionary" (non-mandatory) spending before sequestration.

In general, this appropriations bill perpetuates the Washington spendathon without making the needed decisions to slash government spending and eliminate deficit spending - projected to be $973 billion for fiscal 2013 in the budget Obama submitted in April.

The House agreed to this legislation on March 21, 2013 by a vote of 318 to 109 (Roll Call 89). We have assigned pluses to the nays because passage of this mammoth continuing resolution provided a way for Congress to perpetuate its fiscally irresponsible, unconstitutional spending habits with a minimum of accountability to its constituents.

H R 325: To ensure the complete and timely payment of the obligations of the United States Government until May 19, 2013, and for other purposes (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr325)

Vote Date: January 23, 2013
Vote: AYE (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2013/roll030.xml)
http://www.thenewamerican.com/freedomindex/images/0.jpg
Bad Vote.

Short-term Debt Limit Increase. This bill (H.R. 325), voted on in January 2013, would suspend the public debt limit through May 18, 2013 and, in effect, allow the Treasury Department to borrow as much as it needs in order to pay its bills over the next four months: February, March, April, and May. Another provision in the bill would withhold pay for representatives or senators if either house fails to approve a budget by April 15. The pay would be withheld for each member of Congress until his or her house agrees to a concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal 2014 or until the last day of the 113th Congress.

The House passed H.R. 325 on January 23, 2013 by a vote of 285 to 144 (Roll Call 30). We have assigned pluses to the nays because the federal government should live within its means and because most of the spending responsible for the ballooning national debt is unconstitutional.

H.R. 5949: FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr5949)

Vote Date: September 12, 2012
Vote: AYE (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2012/roll569.xml)
http://www.thenewamerican.com/freedomindex/images/0.jpg
Bad Vote.

FISA. The proposed FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 (H.R. 5949) would reauthorize for five years, through 2017, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which governs electronic surveillance of foreign terrorism suspects. The law allows warrantless surveillance of foreign targets who may be communicating with people in the United States, provided that the secret FISA court approves surveillance procedures.

The Senate passed H.R. 5949 on September 12, 2012 by a vote of 301 to 118 (Roll Call 569). We have assigned pluses to the nays because warrantless surveillance is unconstitutional and violates privacy and individual liberty. While ostensibly carried out only on "foreign suspects" communicating with U.S. citizens, it is difficult to imagine this surveillance not extending to U.S. citizens.

H.Amdt. 1414 to H.R. 5856: An amendment to reduce appropriations made in Title IX of the bill by $20,843,869,000. The reduction shall not apply to the following accounts 1) Defense Health Program; 2) Drug Interdiction and Counter-Drug Activities, Defense; 3) Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Fund; and 4) Office of the Inspector General. (http://beta.congress.gov/amendment/112th-congress/house-amendment/1414/amendments-to-this-amendment)

Vote Date: July 18, 2012
Vote: NAY (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2012/roll485.xml)
http://www.thenewamerican.com/freedomindex/images/0.jpg
Bad Vote.

Afghanistan Withdrawal (Defense Appropriations Reduction). During consideration of the Defense appropriations bill for fiscal 2013 (H.R. 5856), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) proposed an amendment to cut overseas military spending by almost $21 billion. The intent behind the amendment was to allow enough funding for an orderly withdrawal from the unpopular war in Afghanistan but not enough to continue the conflict. According to Rep. Lee, the original bill includes over $85 billion for the war in Afghanistan.

The House rejected Lee's amendment on July 18, 2012 by a vote of 107 to 312 (Roll Call 485). We have assigned pluses to the yeas because the massive expenditure on undeclared foreign wars and nation building is unconstitutional and unaffordable.

H.R. 3523: Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr3523)

Vote Date: April 26, 2012
Vote: AYE (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2012/roll192.xml)
http://www.thenewamerican.com/freedomindex/images/0.jpg
Bad Vote.

Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). This bill (H.R. 3523) would foster information sharing about cyber threats between the federal government and private businesses. Businesses that would participate in this sharing would be protected from lawsuits regarding this sharing of their customers' private information with the government. According to Violet Blue in an article posted on ZDNet.com on June 8, "Most people familiar with CISPA believe it will wipe out decades of consumer privacy protections and is primarily to give the US government unprecedented access to individuals' online data and communications."

The House passed H.R. 3523 on April 26, 2012 by a vote of 248 to 168 (Roll Call 192). We have assigned pluses to the nays because the CISPA bill would permit government access to the private information of citizens, in violation of the Fourth Amendment "right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures."

On Friday’s broadcast of Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) guaranteed he would win any pending contest for the House Majority Leader spot as an outgoing-Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) has to vacate the House Majority Leader position, which looks to be coming down between House Majority Whip Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Labrador.

Labrador gave his biography and touched on a number of topics, including immigration, the economy, Second Amendment rights and Benghazi.

The press doesn't seem to be giving him much of a chance. Randy Weber had a good quote though:

"I think McCarthy's got this wrapped up. I think he had it wrapped up pretty quick," Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who supports McCarthy, told reporters.

Kinzinger, from a blue state himself, later told CNN he doesn't buy the red-state versus blue-state argument since House members represent districts, not states, and House GOP leaders all represent conservative districts.

When Sessions was asked about McCarthy having it locked up, his Texas colleague, Randy Weber, chimed in saying, "Eric Cantor thought he had it locked up, too, down in his own district."

"Thank you, that's perhaps a good point," added Sessions.

I don't trust him on the amnesty issue. Like the man who was just voted out of office, Labrador's record is one of working with the Democrats to help achieve their ends.

Anyone who can't recognize the vital national sovereignty issue here is not going to get my support.

We need more options, in particular an option which is not going to consent to having a mass amnesty of foreign citizens shoved down our throat.

Because being wrong on a particular issue at a critical point in time can have more bad effect than all the 75% good can have good effect over the course of a whole political career. Not all issues are equal, and the relative importance of any given issue fluctuates over time.

Right now there is a coordinated effort to force an amnesty and the failure to stop it will mean the end of a united America.

"McCarthy was recently named in an ABC News/Sunlight Foundation report as the biggest spender in the House for spending congressional money on food and coffee for visitors, dropping $95,000 on entertaining House visitors in his offices in 2012."

Is this who we want to represent Republicans in the House? We need someone like Raul Labrador who supports fiscal conservatism.

McCarthy doesnt have to fear a primary challenge. He has open primaries where he just needs enough RINO, illegal alien and Democrats to keep him in the race like Neel Kashkari. Worst Case scenario for McCarthy it is McCarthy vs a conservative in November and 99% of Democrats vote for McCarthy in a R vs R runoff.

Raul Labrador only got 80% in his last 2 primaries and less than 50% in his 2010 primary. Labrador has to fear a primary if he screws up on an issue.

McCarthy is more pro-amnesty than Labrador. McCarthy can put an amnesty bill on the floor any time he wants. He is never going to lose an open primary.

Trending toward freedom and less government is better than moving in the other direction :)

McCarthy is actually worse than Cantor if you can believe that. Labrador would be a huge upgrade. He's not the ghost of Murray Rothbard, but he does attend YAL events with Dr. Paul, Massie, and Amash.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. A certain segment of libertarians just want to watch the world burn.
