The federal government declared Friday that it will launch a 2 million dollar program to supply illegal immigrant minors with lawyers. The announcement came in the wake of the recently leaked photos of immigrant children held in Border Patrol warehouses in Texas and Arizona. (see here..http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?453571-Unaccompanied-Children-Sleeping-in-Cages-as-Border-Patrol-Overwhelmed)

The Department of Justice is collaborating with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers AmeriCorps, to launch the program:
The interagency agreement reflects the spirit of a presidential memorandum issued on July 15, 2013, that established the Task Force on Expanding National Service. The task force calls on federal agency leaders to identify ways to address some of the nation's most pressing challenges by expanding national service.
“With the launch of justice AmeriCorps, we're taking a historic step to strengthen our justice system and protect the rights of the most vulnerable members of society,” said Attorney General Eric Holder. “How we treat those in need, particularly young people who must appear in immigration proceedings - many of whom are fleeing violence, persecution, abuse or trafficking - goes to the core of who we are as a nation. Through this program, we reaffirm our allegiance to the values that have always shaped our pursuit of justice. We empower new generations of aspiring attorneys and paralegals to serve their country and stand on the front lines of this fight. And we bolster both the efficacy and the efficiency of our immigration courts.”

EL SALVADOR OFFICIALS VISITING, INTERVIEWING UNACCOMPANIED MINORS IN U.S. CUSTODY

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Consular representatives from El Salvador have been involved in identifying and offering protection to the unaccompanied minors flooding across the border, according to a source at the El Salvador Embassy.
“Our consulate in Tucson, Arizona, reports a number of visits to shelters and detention centers and several interviews with Salvadoran minors,” the Embassy source told Breitbart News.
In recent months the numbers of unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors have vastly increased resulting in what President Obama has termed an “urgent humanitarian situation.”
Many of the children are from Central America, specifically El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
The El Salvador Embassy source would only say there are “multiple reasons” for the surge in unaccompanied children crossing the border into the United States but did not name any specific reasons.

EXCLUSIVE–SEN. JEFF SESSIONS: OBAMA 'COMMITTED TO ESCALATING' LAWLESSNESS AT BORDER

There is now an unprecedented crisis unfolding at the border. The flow of illegal immigrant youth across the southern border is on track to reach 130,000 next year—a projected increase of more than 2,000% from 2011. The White House estimates the cost of “resettling” these illegal immigrants in the United States will reach $2.3 billion in a single year.
This crisis is a direct and predictable result of the President’s sustained and deliberate campaign to dismantle immigration enforcement. His administration has announced to the world that our nation’s immigration laws will not be enforced and that, in particular, they will not be applied to foreign youth.
The world has heard and heeded the President’s message. A wave of illegal immigration has overwhelmed authorities, producing a completely preventable humanitarian crisis—and further diminishing the integrity of our national borders. And there is but one way for the crisis to end: for the President of the United States to declare to the world: "Do not attempt to come here illegally. Our border is no longer open. Our laws will be enforced."
A local TV station in Texas recently issued a telling report. They revealed that information is being disseminated in Central America urging people to make the life-threatening trek north in pursuit of amnesty: "A mother and child told Channel 5 News that the message being disseminated in their country is, 'go to America with your child, you won't be turned away.'"

CANTOR RACE COULD END AMNESTY DREAM FOR 2014

The fate of amnesty legislation this year may depend on House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's (R-VA) margin of victory Tuesday in a primary campaign that has surprisingly emerged as a high-profile immigration battle.
While a trio of House Republicans – Reps. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) – are canvassing the GOP conference on whether there is appetite to tackle immigration before the August recess, Cantor has had to fend off a long-shot, underfunded economics professor who rose in the polls by relentless attacking Cantor on the issue.
In the closing hours of the campaign, Randolph-Macon economics professor David Brat launched yet another immigration broadside on Cantor, declaring “A vote for Eric Cantor on June 10th is a vote for open borders and lower wages” and that “Cantor's absolute determination to pass amnesty knows no bounds."
Cantor's political hands, meanwhile, sought to frame the opposition as an inside-the-beltway battle between himself and conservative media outlets like Breitbart that have closely watched the race.

REPORTERS REVOLT AS OBAMA OFFICIALS STONEWALL ON ALIENS RELEASED FROM CUSTODY

With illegal immigrants streaming across the southern border, senior Obama administration officials couldn't provide reporters specific information about how many have been released from custody into the U.S. on a conference call with reporters Monday, prompting frustration from the 4th Estate.
The call was on “background,” which means that the government officials providing the information can be quoted, but not by name, a fact that didn't sit well with the first questioner. “First can somebody explain why it's on background, considering last week, [name redacted], you were on the record?” a reporter asked.
“But second can you guys discuss in greater detail the number of families, total number of people who have been released from ICE custody on notices to appear and how many have actually reported as directed,” the reporter added.
The senior administration official said background calls are conducted “all the time,” but didn't have any new information about the second question.
Later in the call, the questions became more insistent.
“I’ve been asking for more than a week now for numbers in regard to parents with children who are coming through, who are from Central America and we still haven’t heard anything. And I am wondering, why the hold up?” asked a second reporter.
“We don’t have information for you … on the numbers of families at the moment,” an administration official answered.
A third reporter followed-up: “I have been asking for similar statistics. I’ve been waiting several days now. Trying to quantity how many of these children are ending up by state, including Georgia. For example, how many of children are receiving special juvenile status can you break that down by state? The same thing for ICE authorities how many children are ICE encountering in each state or at least nationally who are evading the border authorities?”
A senior administration official said she did not have that data.
The Obama administration has however been updating the Customs and Border Protection website with numbers of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors crossing the border.
Friday, the Associated Press reported that the Obama administration would not disclose how many illegal immigrants have been released into the United States amid a recent spike in illegal migration — compounded by a surge in unaccompanied illegal immigrant children — through Texas.
The influx is so overwhelming the Border Patrol the government has taken to transporting illegal immigrants to Arizona and releasing them with instructions to report back to the government within 15 days.
In a recent internal draft memo, Deputy Chief of Border Patrol Ronald D. Vitiello suggested that this policy could serve to further lure more illegal immigrants across the border.
“Releasing other than Mexican family units, credible fear claims, and low-threat aliens on their own recognizance, along with facilitating family reunification of [unaccompanied alien children] in lieu of repatriation to their country of citizenship, serve as incentives for additional individuals to follow the same path,” Vitiello wrote.
Monday’s conference call with senior administration officials focused on the surge of unaccompanied illegal immigrant children at the border, which to date have seen a 92 percent increase over last year.
The senior officials stressed that despite conversations that current policies and possible immigration legislation has generated rumors driving more illegal immigration to the United States, neither the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program or the Senate-passed immigration reform bill would apply to the current surge of largely children from Central American countries coming into the United States illegally.

Turn 'em loose and give 'em nothing.

Government giving away stuff is a major problem whether its lawyers for foreigners or food and housing for those not working.

I see this as no different that giving away planefulls of cash to various regimes overseas when borrowing to cover interest on the debt....

why do the idiots in washington have the need to spend so much on simple problems? Heres a cheap solution for a nation carrying the burden of a unfathomable debt and a growing unemployment problem....

just turn them loose and don't spend any money on them! hey how about that?

let them fend for themselves. what ever states have the friendliest laws to illegals, they will migrate to, and then they will be that state's problem, and the rest of us don't have to worry about it. Why does everything have to be socialized, even the lawyers? wtf do they need lawyers for? they need to be either shipped back, or turned loose to fend for themselves.

Or how about just secure the border? supposedly there are lots of groups of people out there who hate us for our freedoms and all that crap, so why are there basically open borders? if children can get in here easily, then we have a problem.

What is the outrage here about? These are children we are talking about. Surely we want children to have legal aid if they need it?

Adults we can expect to work to provide for their needs. If the children were being given solid gold iphones and trips to Disneyland, that'd be something to be furious about. If the money was spent on drones to bomb the kids, that'd certainly be something worth being angry about. If its simply offering legal aid though..

If you are an an-cap you can on principle be angry about any tax funded program. If you are a minarchist though you recognize the need for a state run court system (i.e. "socialized" legal system). Even if you believe that these children are criminals, they deserve legal aid to navigate the system to the same degree that others do. The alternative of leaving them without help, or convicting them without trial, is disturbing.

Who are paid by taxpayers. If there are 100,000 such children that comes out to $20 apiece.

Can't really call these kids "undocumented workers," libs, can you? Bet that is making them insane... hope so.

SO why are they coming? The trip is dangerous and difficult.

The young people, mostly from Mexico and Central America, ride to the border on the roofs of freight trains or the backs of buses. They cross the Rio Grande on inner tubes, or hike for days through extremes of heat and chill in Arizona deserts. The smallest children, like Juan, are most often brought by smugglers.

Some to join parents already here. Parents who used to come for temporary work and leave now stay because border security is tighter making it harder to leave and come back so they don't go home and try to get the rest of their family to join then here. Others fleeing problems at home.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/26/us/more-young-illegal-immigrants-face-deportation.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Young migrants say they are fleeing sharply escalating criminal violence in their home countries. Federal agencies have scrambled to muster adequate detention facilities, while legal groups try to find lawyers to represent them. Judges, for their part, have struggled to offer fair hearings to penniless youths who speak little English and often do not even understand why they are in court.

Recent illegal crossers are also excluded from an Obama administration policy applying prosecutorial discretion to spare illegal immigrants from deportation if they have not been convicted of crimes.

Nor has there been any effect from a recent change in Mexican law that would make it easier for young migrants from Central America to cross Mexico on their way to the United States. That law has not yet been put into practice, Mexican officials said.

Some answers came from the Women’s Refugee Commission, an advocacy group in New York, which interviewed more than 150 young migrants in Texas in June. Most said they were seeking to escape increasingly violent gangs and drug traffickers at home, who were recruiting children aggressively.

“They are willing to risk the uncertain dangers of the trip north to escape certain dangers they face at home,” said Jessica Jones, a member of the commission’s fact-finding team.

Sometimes parents living illegally in this country will initiate a child’s journey. Tighter border enforcement under the Obama administration has made them reluctant to leave, fearing that they will not be able to return. Instead, they hire smugglers, paying up to $5,000 per child.

“The children at home feel unloved, they feel empty,” said Elizabeth G. Kennedy, a researcher at San Diego State University who studies child migrants. “If parents know their child is feeling empty and is in danger, they will make a decision.”

It is silly to imply that the Democratic Party is the pro-welfare party. Both the Republican and Democratic Parties are pro-welfare. Both are pro-war to boot. Ron Paul and a few other libertarians ran under the Republican brand, but that doesn't mean that the Republican Party was, is, or will be pro-liberty. It is one thing to use the Republican brand for the sake of convenience but we mustn't fool ourselves into thinking that we are part of the Republican Party core.

Anyway back on topic; if you're an An Cap you were free to be angry about this news. If you support even a minimal state in the Anglo-American tradition though its unclear how you can be angry about legal aid being offered. Even if you believe these individuals are criminals or invaders you should support their right to fair treatment in the court system, which includes access to 'free' legal aid. One of the many sad aspects of the US immigration system is that habeas corpus does not exist in most immigration courts. You don't get a jury, you don't get a lawyer, you don't get to appeal. You are simply kicked out.

You can think of the situation here analogous to that of prisoners in Guantanamo and similar installations. You don't have to believe that those held in Guantanamo are innocent to believe that they have a right to fair treatment under the court system.

I think what will happen is that too many families will be destroyed. Oh, youre the child of an illegal and have no family here? Suuuuuuuuure, you can stay. Oh, you have no family in Mexico and all your family is here? Deport. We know damn well this is how Govt operates and handles too many cases where CPS gets involved.
