Joe 'you lie!' Wilson gets challenge from anti-NDAA vet

Seven-term South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson, who made national headlines when he shouted "You lie!" during Obama's 2009 State of the Union speech, is facing a primary challenge from a career US Army Sargent.

The challenger, Eddie McCain (http://mccain4congress.com), criticizes Wilson's votes for bank bailouts and for the NDAA. "NDAA" is the popular term for a law first passed in 2011 which purports to allow the US military to arrest and detain US citizens without charge or trial, indefinitely, for the duration of the "war on terror."

The NDAA, the National Defense Authorization Act, is a part of the appropriations process for the Pentagon. Determinations of who is "associated" with terrorism are made in secret by the executive branch. The citizen can then be held incommunicado "until the end of hostilities." No one need be told the citizen's whereabouts, nor even that he or she has been arrested.

The Columbia Free Times reports: (http://www.free-times.com/news/joe-wilson-draws-challengers-from-all-sides-052114) "McCain feels Wilson isn’t conservative enough, citing the congressman’s 2008 vote in favor of TARP, which bailed out banks during the financial crisis; and his support of NSA spying on American citizens, the Patriot Act and parts of the National Defense Authorization Act, all of which he feels violate the Constitution. "

South Carolinians head to the primary elections this Tuesday June 10th. Although he has raised little money compared to Wilson's $600,000 war chest, McCain has maintained a busy schedule of meet and greets and other campaign activities. In a speech before the Columbia, SC Tea Party, McCain, (no relation to the US senator,) discoursed at length on the rights guaranteed to Americans under the US Constitution. At one point he said, "You are a soldier who hasn't seen your wife in six months, and you are on the phone and you want to get sexy with your wife, you have the right to do that without someone putting on headphones and listening in."

Joe Wilson Campaign

In the speech McCain said he believed that if elected, it would mark the first time a career enlisted man had served in the US Congress. McCain has said he would not accept congressional retirement, which lawmakers are eligible for after five years, and would work to eliminate the congressional pension system. He points out that he had to serve 20 years before being eligible for pension through the Army.

In 2012 McCain incurred the wrath of Joe Wilson's wife for pointing out his NDAA vote. That year as he ran for state representative, McCain pointed out in a speech that Wilson had voted for the NDAA.

The Lexington Chronicle related in article entitled "Congressman's Wife Threatens Candidate" (http://www.meetup.com/central-midlands-libertarians/messages/32771972/): "Congressman Joe Wilson's wife, it seems, did not appreciate the remarks of Eddie McCain, a candidate for State House District #39, at a Friday morning breakfast meeting of the Cayce Mafia. Eddie pointed out that Joe Wilson had voted for the National Defense Authorization Act, referring to it as "a wipeout of our Fourth Amendment...It is reported that Roxanne Wilson stated to McCain, "I will put that out in your area, and tell everybody in Batesburg-Leesville that you don't support Joe Wilson and we'll see if that helps you with your election." Wilson's wife responded with a letter to the editor (http://lexingtonchronicle.com/chronicleheadline-misleading-p29851-73.htm) of the Chronicle denying she had "threatened" McCain:

"I, in no way threatened Eddie McCain, a candidate for House Seat 39. district...I did state that I would let the people in the Batesburg-Leesville area know that he was not a supporter of my husband, Congressman Joe Wilson. It was a statement of fact, not a threat. "

In the Columbia Tea Party speech, McCain said the incumbent Joe Wilson'r main claim to fame was that he told Obama "You lie!" "What did that get you?" he quipped. South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Carolina%27s_2nd_congressional_district) spans from Columbia to the South Carolina side of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area.

SC has a a strong NDAA nullification movement, if people put 2 and 2 together that this is one of the clowns who voted for it he might be less popular. From what I see in the comments in SC politics he is not that popular. Lots of "Bye bye Joe." The primary will be low turnout it will all depend on if Eddie gets people to the polls. Sure there are a lot of registered Republicans who don't even know there is a primary. In addition Columbia Tea Party is behind Eddie.

Eddie's speech before the Columbia Tea Party was a full house and very well-received. Tea Party power could pull this off, given a primary can be won with a relatively small number of votes in an off-year election. Also Eddie has not been sitting at home he is a worker who has been storming the district. By Eddie flying under the radar Wilson could get a surprise.

Well, McCain did win the SC Primary. Maybe the senile, pro-war contingent of voters thinking they are voting for John McCain will be enough to push him in to contention.

I think Gowdy and Mulvaney pandering on amnesty and Spanish speaking town halls will help Joe Wilson survive. The same way Walter Jones survived. Were they just going to elect a male version (Taylor Griffin) of Renee Ellmers just to get rid of an incumbent?

S Carolina GOP Rep mulls amnesty at townhall -- held entirely in Spanish

https://twitter.com/DRUDGE_REPORT/status/437731030976315392

The GOP base didn't rally in 2010 for Tim Scott, Gowdy, Mulvaney and Jeff Duncan expecting 2 of them to go and pander to illegal aliens.

Tim Scott and Joe Wilson are strongest on amnesty out of the delegation.

Eddie McCain is against amnesty and pandering but it doesn't work that way in removing an incumbent especially after the way Gowdy and Mulvaney behaved.

If roughly half of the GOP in SC hates Lindsey Graham I am sure there is a lot of voters who are not supportive of trying to make an immigration deal with Obama and Chuck Schumer.

I'll be very surprised if Wilson did not win, he turned out to be man ahead of his times with those prophetic words : - )

He has no chance. Wilson is very popular. I live in Wilson's district and yes he is for the most part quite popular down here. He will have no trouble in the primary.
