Residents of a northern California county on Tuesday voted in favor of a measure that will now force local officials to consider a plan to secede from the state and form a new entity named Jefferson.

That decision — one of three related matters being considered by voters across the Golden State on Tuesday this week — passed by 55.74 percent in Tehama County, with nearly 1,000 more ballots cast towards seceding from California compared to staying.

“The vote is not binding, but serves merely to help the County gauge public support for the proposed separation from the State of California and formation of a new state,” according to the fine print on Tuesday’s questionnaire. “The Tehama County Board of Supervisors may take whatever action it desires, or no action, regardless of the vote.”

"My position is that I want to know the will of the people. And that is what I will follow, that is what I will do,”Supervisor Sandy Bruce said ahead of this week’s vote in Tehama.

Historically the "State of Jefferson" movement goes back to the 1940's and was supposed to include the far north counties of California and also the far South West counties of Oregon. The residents of both areas felt ignored and disrespected by the respective State governments, which is why the State Flag of the movement is 2 "X"s as in "double cross".

I should know: I live in the State of Jefferson and it has been listed as my location from the time I joined the board in 2007!

Lots of small businesses here have State of Jefferson as part of their name. The public radio station in Ashland , OR is named "Jefferson State Radio".

There's a good article in Wikipedia:

On November 27, 1941, a group of young men gained national media attention when, brandishing hunting rifles for dramatic effect, they stopped traffic on U.S. Route 99 south of Yreka, the county seat of Siskiyou County, and handed out copies of a Proclamation of Independence, stating that the state of Jefferson was in "patriotic rebellion against the States of California and Oregon" and would continue to "secede every Thursday until further notice."[5]

The secession movement ended quickly, though not before John C. Childs of Yreka was inaugurated as the governor of the State of Jefferson.[6] The first blow was the death of Mayor Gable on December 2, followed by the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7. Secessionists focused their efforts on the war effort, which crippled the movement. Coincidentally, the "state of Jefferson" was one of the few places in the continental USA to be the subject of an attack during World War II, when Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita dropped bombs on the Oregon Coast near Brookings on September 9, 1942.

“The vote is not binding, but serves merely to help the County gauge public support for the proposed separation from the State of California and formation of a new state,” according to the fine print on Tuesday’s questionnaire.

OK, so here the "will of the people" is apparently a trifle?

“The Tehama County Board of Supervisors may take whatever action it desires, or no action, regardless of the vote.”

So why, then, take the "vote"? Is it to gauge the chances of being hung from the nearest light post in the event they make the "wrong" choice?

"My position is that I want to know the will of the people. And that is what I will follow, that is what I will do,”Supervisor Sandy Bruce said ahead of this week’s vote in Tehama.

And here "will of the people" is not so mere?

Jesus people... make up your damned minds... or is there going to be a big fight between council members? I have plenty of pistols to volunteer toward the goal of resolving their differences.

My question is this: can they do it and if they did, what would the resulting state look like? Gauging from its location and the chosen name-to-be, it would be a comparatively freedom-oriented place. Of course, Hell itself is free when compared with California <sieg HEIL!>.

My REAL question is, what will the rest of the state do? I suspect they will declare it null and march the Guard in if they do not secure immediate and unequivocal compliance.

But if they choose to secede and model their place along the lines of a Galt's Gulch, they would stand to rapidly become the wealthiest county in the nation... at least until Bammy marched his troops in to bring them back into the fold. Oh, and I have no illusions about such a modeling. This is California, after all.
