Teen Driver, Police Officer and Gunman Killed in Norfolk

A police officer, a teen who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the gunman who started it all are dead after a wild night of violence in Norfolk, Virginia late Friday.

The mayhem began when 29-year-old James Brown began firing at random from behind the wheel of his Jeep just before 11 p.m. Mark Rodriguez, 17, was fatally wounded as he drove on Chesapeake Boulevard, NBC station WAVY of Norfolk reported.

Investigators walk away from the scene of a shooting on Wellington Road in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday, one of the sites involved in a string of violence that left Police Officer Brian Jones, a teenager and suspected gunman James Brown dead.

“Mr. Brown was randomly shooting from his vehicle and Mr. Rodriguez was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Police Chief Goldsmith said at a Saturday morning news conference, the station reported.

In the ensuing search for the shooter, Norfolk Police Officer Brian Jones spotted Brown’s empty Jeep near his home, and as he approached, Brown shot him dead with a rifle from inside the house, the station reported. Officer Curtis Allison was wounded.

Brown fled but crashed his car, then fought with pursuing officers. When Brown tried to disarm one of the officers, he was fatally shot, according to the station.

Rodriguez was a junior at Norfolk Christian’s upper school and was driving home from the school’s graduation festivities when he was shot, PilotOnline.com reported.

One of Rodriguez's passions was photography. On Facebook and Instagram, he posted pictures of flowers and horizons, couples and children.

Last summer, he spent a month at a Nicaraguan orphanage, volunteering and ministering.

He helped build a greenhouse and sell bikes to raise money.

"It's incredible to be home, but it'll be tough not to just go back into the motions. I want to remember what I learned (there's a lot!) and I want to live it, not just talk about it," he wrote on his blog about the trip.

His website reveals a young man deeply connected to his faith.

His final blog post, on April 5, is titled "Heaven." Rodriguez describes how, one day, he will be with the Lord, how it will be a celebration, with loud trumpets and wedding bells.

"Every quarrel, every hurt, it's all gonna be resolved," he wrote. "All of God's children will be together and we won't hurt each other anymore; we'll finally understand how to love perfectly."
