(CNN) – Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has won another straw poll, boosting his national profile and elevating his name among potential 2016 presidential contenders.

The firebrand freshman senator and tea party favorite was among a handful of 2016 hopefuls speaking at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans this week.

Cruz finished in first place in the annual conference's presidential straw poll at 30.33%. Dr. Ben Carson, a Fox News commentator and conservative activist, finished in second with 29.38% while Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, was third with 10.43%.

I figured the crowd this year looked like this:

The fact that CNN covered this with such a positive spin for Cruz is very telling.

Edit: Cruz was on This Week with George Stephanopolis, with a caption during the interview of "Exclusive interview with Tea Party Star". This was the definition of a friendly interview. It was pretty much just a way to give Cruz a lot of free airtime. Stephanopolis even brought up Rand Paul on the subject of Hillary, to make Rand seem more extreme than Ted Cruz.

30% of 1500 delegates is about 500 delegates that attended.

Ted Cruz won 30% of 500 delegates, which is about 165 delegates...

Wow ;s

Ben Carson really came to prominence with conservatives with his speech at the prayer breakfast with Obama ... the Whitehouse later asked for an apology to Obama after the speech, to which he refused.

Conservatives love him. My personal belief is that he is especially appealing to conservatives because supporting him (in their minds) proves they are not racist as they are constantly labeled and it's making the statement - we don't disdain Obama because of his color, but because of his policies. And who better than a black man to say political correctness as gone too far ... just my opinion of course.

Also, he went up against Whoopi on the view:

I believe he is a little washy on the 2nd amendment though ... will add more to that later.

ADD: OK, here it is:

Appearing on Glenn Beck's radio show this past week, Carson took a vastly different stance from most conservatives on the issue of gun control, claiming you shouldn't be able to own semi-automatic weapons in large cities.

Asked by Beck for his thoughts on the Second Amendment, Carson gave the popular pro-gun argument: "There's a reason for the Second Amendment; people do have the right to have weapons."

But when asked whether people should be allowed to own "semi-automatic weapons," the doctor replied: "It depends on where you live. I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I'm afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it," Carson elaborated. However, if you live "out in the country somewhere by yourself" and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he added, "I've no problem with that."

This should automatically take him out of the running (as the "republican" candidate) as far as I'm concerned. I wonder if most conservatives even know his position on this.

I've heard of Ben Carson. As I recall he was better than most on the war issue. That said, his view on semi-automatics should completely disregard him, IMO. That said, Ted Cruz is absolutely disgusting and I'd vote for a random name I didn't know over Cruz, so there's that.
