Should the government hire long term unemployed folks? We could fix infrastructure and roads, etc, and lower unemployment

No. There is private business to bid on those jobs.

Frédéric Bastiat sees what you did ... (http://bastiat.org/en/twisatwins.html)

(... and so does Henry Hazlitt ...) (http://mises.org/books/economics_in_one_lesson_hazlitt.pdf)

Technically, they would work for China, because their money would come from China.

I can tell you what govt should do , dust off Article One , Section Eight , read it , use it and bitch slap themselves if they think about spending any monies not authorized there . On the third offense , they should hang themselves .

Do you even care about understanding economics or do you just want to promote and defend communism/socialism/collectivism/statism?

Which government? Your county government? Or are you seriously suggesting the federal government fix roads in your county? Do you have any idea how much less efficient that would be? Do you not realize that, despite your religious ferver in believing that the federal government loves you and wants you to be happy, there probably isn't one person in Washington who knows where your county is--including the House member who represents it?

Have you done a survey to see how many of the unemployed in your area are skilled steel workers, good welders, familiar with how to work concrete, good at laying asphalt so it lasts, capable of properly superelevating curves...

Or are you trying to kill people?

Then there's that other matter--the one you think ignorance of is bliss. Are we going to borrow the money, further mortgaging our sovereignty, steal the money from consumers in an already moribund economy, or print the money thus further depleting the saving of our elderly and causing more fear in the business community over the fluctuation? Inquiring minds want to know.
