LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Five city police and two sheriff's departments are to receive Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, provided through the military surplus program. The armored vehicles, now demilitarized, are part of the Defense Department's 1033 program that allows domestic law enforcement agencies to apply for and obtain the excess military equipment.

Here in Arkansas, the Arkansas Law Enforcement Support Office - a unit within the Arkansas Department of Career Education - accepted the armored vehicle requests of several police and sheriff's departments from across the state. Agencies had to explain why the vehicles were needed in their jurisdictions. They also must have a tactical team, such as SWAT, already in place in order to be considered.

Arkansas received 14 MRAPs valued at nearly $733,000.00 each.

The following Arkansas law enforcement agencies are recipients of the specialized vehicles:

Benton Police Department
Benton County Sheriff's Office
Hot Springs Police Department
Jacksonville Police Department
Jefferson County Sheriff's Department
Little Rock Police Department
Texarkana Police Department.
They come at no cost the agencies, outside of a service fee.

"The Arkansas LESO program is dedicated to providing the law enforcement agencies with quality excess government property that assists the agencies with their mission, while reutilizing property paid for citizens' tax dollars," said James Ray, director of the Arkansas Law Enforcement Support Office.
