View Full Version : Tom McMillin candidacy needs some more national media coverage

I think this race is an intriguing story and deserving of some more media attention. Tom McMillin might be the most anti-NSA guy in congress if he gets elected judging from some of the bills he has introduced as a Michigan rep, statements made, tweets... while the guy he is trying to replace (Mike Rogers) was probably the biggest defender of the NSA in congress. That would be quite a remarkable turnaround if Tom won and a really big story, but even the fact that it could possibly happen is an interesting story and I would like to see some more media outlets writing about it so more people are aware of and involved in the race. I was thinking of contacting Ben Swann to see if he could write an article -- who else could we tweet at or contact, or what else could we do to get this race some more exposure?

Look for the reporters who wrote articles about Amash's primary. There's been several from national media like Politico, National Journal, etc.

Ben Swann would be a good start, and maybe Jack Hunter at Rare too? I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been a story by them yet considering the implications.

Some good suggestions in this thread so far. I think Rare would definitely do a story on this race, it is right up their alley and there are some other websites like United Liberty or Policy Mic that might also be a good place to start. I could see National Journal or Politico covering this race in the future too. Really we just need one article to get the ball rolling and then we can send it out to others to write about further or retweet. Then we can use those articles to post them on reddit, facebook, or other political websites/forums.

It might be good to gather together some information in this thread on everything about Tom McMillin as it relates to the NSA -- I think anyone writing about this race for the first time is likely to focus on the Mike Rogers vs. Tom McMillin angle. I'll try to gather some info later and if anyone has any other suggestions or useful information for someone writing an article you can post it in this thread.

So if anyone reading this thread is considering writing an article about the race, it might be good to focus on the Mike Rogers vs. Tom McMillin angle as an important element to the story. Here is some stuff about Tom McMillin as it relates to the NSA:

Tom introduces Fourth Amendment Rights Protection Act to prohibit state from aiding the federal government in the warrantless collection of electronic data and metadata of Michigan residents:
http://gophouse.org/mcmillin-introduces-fourth-amendment-rights-protection-act/

Tom introduces HR 205 urging Congress to prosecute James Clapper for lying under oath during congressional testimony:

Tom also calls for Clapper to be prosecuted on the issues page of his website:

This thread has a collection of more tweets from Tom and some of his views on other issues:

In contrast to McMillin, Mike Rogers has a well established record of staunchly defending the NSA and otherwise siding with the neocon wing of the Republican Party on other issues such as when it comes to foreign policy. He was also at the forefront of the opposition to the Amash amendment to end the phone records data collection this past summer. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and was recently in consideration to replace Robert Mueller as director of the FBI.

Here are some threads on RPF pertaining to Mike Rogers:

Maybe we can send this thread out to people who we would like to do a story on the race, the above information will be helpful to them in crafting an article or at least perking their interest. Ultimately the race is going to come down to Tom McMillin vs. Mike Bishop but the Mike Rogers aspect of it is what the media might find more compelling and choose to focus on in many articles.

If anyone has any other ideas or information helpful to some writing a story they can post it in this thread too.

Next we need to collect the contact information of people who can write an article and then send out some tweets/emails.

I tweeted at Jack Hunter and also Matt Naham from rare.us, who has been writing a lot of articles about liberty defenders like Rand Paul, Justin Amash, Thomas Massie and others lately.

Also I tweeted at Ben Swann and one of his writers Michael Lotfi, who covers a lot about the liberty movement and Paul/Amash/Massie.

Then I tried to tweet @JuleBorowski to see if there is anything she can do to help (she writes articles occasionally for FreedomWorks and Townhall) and my account was immediately suspended! It's a new account.. those were actually my first 2 tweets.. but I was shocked they would suspend my account so soon considering some of the other blatant spam they allow on twitter.

It looks like the account is not suspended any more, I was able to send out a test tweet a few minutes ago... maybe will send a few more dummy tweets and then try to resume tweeting at people tomorrow.

So for those who have heard him speak or knew of him long before this race, is his rhetoric solid? More than that, can he appeal to a broad spectrum. Obviously his rhetoric shouldn't always sound like he's running for mayor of Daily Paul or RonPaulForums. As much as I like Greg Brannon, I still feel his message only appealed to a certain crowd as opposed to voters as a whole. Does McMillin do something similar? From a practical point of view, if a liberty candidate's message is nothing but 'Constitution this,' 'Liberty that,' very few people outside of the crowd that's already backing him will be hard pressed to jump on board.

That's a start, yeah. It'd be easy to spread it around Facebook pages. I do feel the whole 'Stick it to the GOP establishment' sets this up as yet another civil war battle, with another uphill climb since Bishop has Rogers' backing and is, according to early polls- at least, the one posted here- ahead.

Justin Amash makes a plea to supporters of liberty

Submitted by David A Dudenhoefer on Fri, 06/06/2014 - 13:05

Tom McMillin is a name you should get familiar with. He is running for congress in Michigan's 8th district. The seat is held by the NSA, NDAA loving and liberty shredding, Mike Rogers.

Rogers as you know has been a thorn in the side of liberty and has felt the heat from us which is why he is stepping down.

The race is an open seat and Rogers has tapped someone equally as damning to our liberties, so we need Tom to win this and send a clear message to the establishment in the same way that Amash will in November!

Tom is currently serving as a state rep in Michigan and on his 2nd term.

In addition to being supported by Justin Amash, Tom has been a consistent champion of privacy and property rights issues. He fought to reign in state and local police powers of unmitigated drone use, he fought the state minimum wage hike, the Detroit bailout, Common Core, medicaid expansion to name just a few issues.

He is currently championing Michigan Campaign for Liberty's efforts though a constitutional amendment to restore a "part time legislature"!

Today is Tom's birthday, and although the use of term, "money bomb" has been overused, I would like to suggest that we show support to a candidate that in Amash's words, "is a true legislator".

Here is the link to donate>>> http://www.tom4michigan.com/

I was just at a fundraiser for Justin Amash that Tom attended, and in Justin's words, "I need more individuals like Tom to add to our liberty caucus in DC, so please support him".

Thank you in advance Daily Paul family.

David.

Recent coverage:

Cantor's loss buoys Mich. tea party hopefuls

U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s stunning primary loss to a tea party candidate in Virginia is giving hope to like-minded Republican candidates in Michigan.
...
Brat’s feat of unseating a powerful incumbent with about $200,000 to Cantor’s $5 million also inspires 8th District congressional hopeful Tom McMillin, a state representative from Rochester Hills whose opponent has been blessed by the outgoing congressman, Mike Rogers, R-Howell.

“The main thing it showed is money’s not everything,” McMillin said. “I think it makes it clear that if you get your message across … and if your message is solid constitutional conservatism and free markets and personal liberty, limited government, I think those are the things people are looking for.”
...
McMillin runs on record, principles

McMillin is considered an underdog against former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop in a Republican primary in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, where Rogersis not seeking re-election.

Bishop is backed by two heavy hitters in the GOP establishment: Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, and Rogers. The district includes Ingham, Livingston and northern Oakland counties.

Bishop has even declared that he is a tea party conservative.

McMillin said he’s not overtly running on the tea party mantle, preferring to highlight his conservative efforts in the Legislature.

“I think generally the voters are looking at principles,” McMillin said. “I’m just running on my record and principles.”

GOP strategist Mitchell says McMillin faces “an uphill struggle.”

“Mike Bishop was a very conservative guy when he was Senate majority leader,” he said, and Rogers’ endorsement will carry weight on his behalf — especially since he chairs the U.S. House Intelligence Committee.
