Fallen support frame mistaken for gunshots at mall

PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — A crowd of frightened shoppers trying to exit a department store after smoke seeped in from a nearby car fire knocked over a metal support frame, leading to mistaken reports of gunshots and the evacuation of the upscale mall, authorities said Sunday.

The panic at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus began shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, when a car caught fire in a parking lot.

As smoke from the blaze entered the store, employees told customers to evacuate. The moving crowd knocked over a large metal display stanchion on the store's main level, causing a loud noise that many confused for gunshots.

Another display setup fell moments later as the frightened crowd rushed out of the store. Authorities say several mall patrons suffered minor injuries during the exodus.

The entire mall was evacuated after the reported gunshots.

State police and several other law enforcement agencies combed through the mall to investigate the shooting report but later determined no shots had been fired. The remaining locked-down stores were searched and cleared by midnight, police said.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the car to erupt into flames.

The mall's restaurants and theater were open Sunday. Its shops are regularly closed Sunday.

very poor HVAC system. (or technicians or management) the "make up air" should keep a slight positive pressure in the building.
this prevents "wild" or unconditioned air from entering the building. keeps oxygen levels up and CO2 down etc.

FWIW, that mall does have quite a history of weird things happening there (I think it's jynxed). From what I heard as well, it wasn't the metal fixtures that people thought were the gunshots, it was the exploding tires of the car (so they say)...

Also, it's not like everyone heard the noises - naturally it only takes one person to hear what they mistake as gunfire for it to trickle down and cause mass panic.

Last but not least, Paramus sucks and so does NJ.

actually, it was when smoking was banned. people started closing off the fresh air vents.
I was trained on those glass high rise building where no one can open a window. cigarette smoke is WAY down the list of airborne toxins.
formaldehyde was #1. (it is also that "new" car smell) fresh air is the ONLY solution.
buildings that are not kept at a positive pressure are dangerous. negative pressures will pull in sewer gas as an example.
ok, nobody asked for a lecture, I will stfu!

I was just thinking this morning about the freedom dirt roads provided me in the National Forest. We had so many safe places to pull aside and stop.

They say up in Alaska people wait for winter because it opens up where they can travel. Kind of hard to imagine.

When someone asks where you’re from and you proudly proclaim New Jersey, their reaction is always the same.

…their opinion of the Garden State is pretty unwavering.
The reason why New Jerseyites don’t argue the point any further is pretty simple.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/2/21/17/anigif_enhanced-buzz-3672-1361485958-10.gif

I mean, does your state make pizza slices as big as babies?

New Jersey is home to some of music’s biggest legends.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr03/2013/2/21/18/enhanced-buzz-23189-1361487971-9.jpg

Like Bruce Springsteen, the most American man to ever live.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr03/2013/2/21/18/enhanced-buzz-21970-1361488522-21.jpg

Or Whitney Houston, who had (has?) the voice of an angel.

Or this guy. What’s his name again? Oh yeah, Frank Motherfugging Sinatra. Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey (the same place that baby-sized pizza came from).

Speaking of Sinatra, did you know it’s a scientific fact that New Jersey breeds the toughest sonsabitches around?

Here’s a photo of Sinatra doing what he does best: not giving a fuck.

And here’s Joe Pesci, a Newark native, wearing a leather jacket in the middle of the summer in Ala-fuggin’-bama because he’s Joe Pesci.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr03/2013/2/21/18/enhanced-buzz-31297-1361489356-0.jpg

Ice-T is also from Newark, and there was a time before Ice Loves Coco when he was considered to be a very tough guy.
This probably has something to do with the fact that NJ is home to one of the most dangerous cities in America: Camden.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/2/21/20/enhanced-buzz-13960-1361497797-0.jpg

So even though it’s sandwiched between New York City and Philadelphia, you’re more likely to get knifed right here in NJ! Impressive, no? Reeelax, we’re not all in the mob.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr02/2013/2/22/12/enhanced-buzz-5059-1361552762-1.jpg

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr03/2013/2/22/12/anigif_enhanced-buzz-21919-1361552772-9.gif

New Jerseyites also have an unmatched sense of humor.

I mean, “Garden” State?
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr02/2013/2/21/18/anigif_enhanced-buzz-24953-1361490117-0.gif

That was a trick. We ARE the Garden State. We earned that title by being so damn gardeny.
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr02/2013/2/21/18/enhanced-buzz-26176-1361490604-5.jpg

New Jersey’s third biggest industry is agriculture (after kickin’ butts and takin’ names), and we have more horses than Kentucky. Ya hear that, Kentucky?

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr02/2013/2/21/18/anigif_enhanced-buzz-26881-1361490838-1.gif

New Jersey is so awesome, New York sports teams are dying to play here.

Ever hear of the New York Giants? Or the New York Jets? More like New Jersey Gigantic Fighter Jets, as they would be called if NJ had its way. Either way, their stadium is located in East Rutherford, NJ.

New Jersey is centrally located near many major attractions.

It’s close to decent-sized mountainous regions (no disrespect, Colorado); New York and Philly; and of course, the Jersey Shore.

Not this abomination.

Most of the people (a loose term) on that show (a looser term) aren’t even from NJ. They slither out of their holes in the North to grease up our beautiful beaches.

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/2/21/20/enhanced-buzz-14817-1361498341-6.jpg

And as douchey as that may sound, we still have some of the lowest gas prices in the country. Cry about it, California.
And we have our own traffic laws.

If you’re in NJ and you hear someone mention a jug handle, they don’t mean this:
http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr01/2013/2/21/21/enhanced-buzz-26701-1361499958-0.jpg

We called them "BENNYs"...

As in, "Fuck, I can't get near the beach today, it's packed with BENNYs".

Growing up on the Jersey Shore, this was a common term, heard it all over, but it was years before I finally discovered what the term meant.

It's a railroad term, an acronym actually, that was used on the PRR/CNJRR line from Newark to Bay Head, which hit all the north shore towns.

It was used to denote larger than normal trains, shore bound, packed full with people from Bayonne - Elizabeth - Newark - New York.
