Cantor’s campaign had bought out all of the rooms in the hotel so his challenger, conservative college professor Dave Brat had to plan his rally across the street from the hotel at a Honey Baked Ham store. Cantor’s team bused in delegates on tour buses who lived some distance from Richmond.

The convention was severely divided. Lynwood Cobb, the incumbent who was supported by Cantor, was challenged by Fred Gruber, a Tea Party favorite.

The first course of business was to elect a temporary chairman for the convention. Eric Cantor’s team supported Virginia Delegate Manoli Loupassi. Gruber’s team nominated one candidate, Russ Moulton, who was ruled to be ineligible for the office. The team scrambled to find a second candidate who lost the vote.

As Loupassi took the podium, it looked like Cantor and his forces would carry the day.

As the vote for Chairman happened, Cantor’s challenger was given the opportunity to speak to the convention. His supporters cheered him loudly, to the surprise of the Cantor people. Brat challenged Cantor on his dishonest ads and his refusal to debate.

Then Cantor was given the opportunity to speak.

Any illusions that the convention was going his way were quickly dissolved as Cantor was loudly booed by Tea Party activists and others supporting Dave Brat and Fred Gruber. Chants of “Liar” and “Debate” were heard through the large convention room.

Cantor was visibly flustered and very visibly angered at the reception he received. Immediately after his speech, he left.

The ultimate shock came when the votes were counted. The Republican Party of Virginia uses a weighted voting system that favors counties that have larger Republican turn out.

When the votes were counted, Fred Gruber had defeated Cantor’s hand picked Chairman Lynwood Cobb, 675.8 to 630. (The .8 is because of the weighting formula).

After the convention, some Cantor supporters left gracefully, congratulating Gruber supporters for the win. Others stormed away. More than one was heard to threaten to pull their money from the GOP because Cantor’s hand picked Chairman lost.

Many in the grassroots have neither forgotten about nor forgiven the establishment for not supporting the conservative Republican ticket for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general last year. All three lost.

For Cantor, this can be nothing short of a red alert moment. The base of his power in Virginia has been cracked. Cantor’s team could not turn out enough voters for his people to keep control of the 7th District.

On June 10th, Virginia will hold its congressional primaries. It is the live or die moment for Eric Cantor. There is no Democrat on the ballot so the winner of the primary wins all.

Dave Brat was well received and he had several instances where the room erupted in applause, and when he talked about Eric Cantor’s record and Cantor’s amendment to exempt his own wife from the new insider trading laws, some of the Cantor Zombies booed. I am not sure why they would support a Congressman exempting his wife from the rules and laws the rest of us have to follow. I found that quite puzzling.

Let me just note. I have heard Eric Cantor speak so many times I have lost count. I have never heard him talk to a group of people that were not known to be Cantor supporters. The man simply does not speak to unfriendly audiences. He became visibly rattles and stumbled and sputtered with his delivery, unable to process the reaction of an audience not composed of primarily Eric Cantor Zombies.

This is what you guys have to watch out for. People will pull their donations, and then later accuse the party of mismanagement of funds.

Sources tell PJ Media that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s long-time top consultant, Ray Allen, has “angrily” stated to multiple individuals that he intends to bankrupt the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV), to install his own people throughout all levels of RPV’s State Central Committee, and to rebuild the RPV with money from Eric Cantor’s donors.
[...]
Slating involves disenfranchising all properly registered delegates at a district convention in favor of a vote by only a few dozen handpicked delegates. This tactic was employed to protect the incumbent chairmanships of some Cantor allies: hundreds to thousands of Tea Party/conservative delegates have been forcefully ejected from VA RPV conventions over the past few weeks and months.

However, the ejected delegates and others opposed to Team Cantor have since had success appealing the slating attempts, leaving Allen and Cantor with little to show for their hardball tactics other than alienated constituents, a terrible local public relations problem, and worse, a rapidly gaining primary opponent in challenger Dave Brat.

Has any of the right wing hosts been talking about this race and the local party implications of Cantor's mob tactics? Anyone here from inside the district w/ a feel for how things are going trajectory-wise?

IIRC, Ingraham and Levin have both mentioned this race (supporting Brat).

CALLER: Well, you have a candidate named Dave Brat that is more conservative than Cantor and is running on the Republican creed in Virginia. And we're just trying to, you know, get the information out there. People just don't know about it, but he is a viable candidate. That is the term. He is a viable candidate. And so that's what I wanted to call in. I remember what you had said, not exactly, but the general gist of it, and I just wanted to go over that, to clear that up for me per se, but for others as well across the country so that they know how to make an informed decision. RUSH: So you've got somebody running opposed to Cantor that you want to support, you think he can win, so you think supporting him is worth it?
CALLER: Yes, I do, because in this case there's no democratic opponent. Whoever wins this race on the Republican primary becomes the next representative of the next seventh district.
